What To Never Say To A Ptsd Sufferer

  1. Get past it. You can't be suffering it still? (I forgot it was as easy as that! How dare I...
St. Nik, I hear ya. BTDT. But I have to express my thoughts on a few of those.
1. It IS going to get better. Not right now, not tomorrow, but someday. We cannot force medical/psychological advances. I remember a few years ago when I was doing EEG Neuro Feedback. Even Anthony was critical of it. But I found for me it worked. Now, I found Alpha Stim works wonders. It's not perfect, but it's better than the EEG Neuro Feedback.
2. Believe in yourself. Believing in yourself is what keeps you going. I've seen what happens to people when they quit believing in themselves, and it's really ugly.
3. Exercise is also good for you. It helps keep you healthy. But if you don't want to do it, don't. No one's forcing you to do anything.

Here I am, officially past the 30 year mark of having to deal with this PTSD crap. God I hate it. But I still love myself no matter what.

You spend too much time on this illness.

No, I have to spend this much time to learn how to heal.

You have become your illness.

Really? I don't know what you mean. Do you mean that I am especially symptomatic right now? Because I have to spend so much more time on this than I do diabetes, but diabetes is a part of my life too. I think about it every time I make a choice of what to eat, how to exercise, how much exercise, my medications etc.

LOL So the 1-2 hours of exercise daily is only keeping me somewhat sane?
Your choice if you want to be healthy or not. Do not let PTSD take you down. By letting it control your exercise you are doing just that.

ON another site I was just on, a woman told her horrific story of domestic violence and an attempt on her life. When she revealed that she had PTSD as a result, another poster said something along the lines of, "How dare you claim PTSD, your not a soldier, you are belittling what a soldier with PTSD goes through." Not an exact quote since it is from another site and I don't want to break the rules, but you get the jest.

Quote......." When she revealed that she had PTSD as a result, another poster said something along the lines of, "How dare you claim PTSD, your not a soldier,"

Aye! why is it that folk just link PTSD with service personal? Don't they know that "anyone" can suffer from it?

It doesn't need to be a combat experience, lots of civilians suffer from it too, any horrific or grotesque event can trigger it, and leave you scarred mentally.

I had it for years and never knew that I had it, I thought I was going mad, and was being treated for depression and anxiety.

It wasn't until I was sent to a physiatrist, for an assessment that I was diagnosed as having PTSD, must admit I was relieved in a way, as I did think I was going mad?
