Who Are Your Heroes?

the Suffragettes

I notice you didn't name modern feminists. Not gonna start a battle, but I often say that suffragettes are turning over in their graves because of the direction of the modern feminist movement (ie different pockets of feminism are either anti-men or even against other women who don't conform to their definition of feminism). So yes, I'd say I admire the suffragettes as they had the concept down to its purest----equal rights, not women vs men or women vs other women.

There are a few politicians I admire. One relative I hold in the highest esteem.

But, nobody I would say is a "hero".

Is it heroic to be a 16 year old boy, having to face the perils of the angry sea in a 10 foot boat, to save his father and friends from being marooned, because the adults were too afraid to take the same challenge? Is it heroic to allow a friend to use you as a totem poll to save his life, whilst in a rip at the beach? Is it heroic to stand behind your friends when being attacked by gangs? Is it heroic to stand up against the courts and the law to save your own children from their sadistic mum, while you have PTSD and win? Is it heroic to allow yourself to be thrown off a motorbike by someone being psycho, to protect a learner who is nervous?

I also have a friend who challenged the cruel, aggressive bullies in the lower socio economic society, to the point of brute force to protect the innocent and weaker people around him. He drove into a man, who was out of control on ICE to protect a woman and her 2 daughters and got away with it because he was fully justified in what he did. I respect this man as he respects me. My hero!

I was once classed as a hero for saving a baby Magpie that fell out of a tree and it even made it to the newspapers and all (true story)

Heroics is courage and we can all be that, if we allow ourselves!!!

Totally, I couldn't agree with those more :-) @Barconian, all those things sound heroic to me (and then again there's the thing about that word "heroic" -maybe it's just what you say: courage). Maybe it's also about having the balls to do the right thing, which is also about courage...

My best friend when I was 11 - she saved my life - I was drowning.

And - a more recent one - Mahala Yousufzai. She's the teenage girl from Pakistan who survived being shot in the head because she is an activist regarding the rights of girls to be educated. She recovered, and went right back to school. That girl is a legend.
