Exercise is hands down one of the biggest weapons in my arsenal, tricks up my sleeve, tools in my kit. Why so many metaphors? Because it hits many different areas. The biggest -for me- is relieving stress. Next up is grounding. But we don't have lastly. Because it ticks so many different boxes as far as being good for both my mental/emotional & physical health that we'd be here all day.
I will caution you in one area: Not all forms of exercise are equal.
- Something you hate? Isn't going to relieve stress as well as something you love, and it will be harder to build a routine around it / look forward to it / use it as a tool to help make your present more present & your future real (see, told ya there were more things), than something you love, grow confidence in, learn to trust, & build into your daily life & long term plans.
- All forms of exercise have side-issues. Good/ Neutral / Bad. As an example? Team Sports & Classes & Public things involve a varying degree of being social in them. Sometimes that's a good thing, and wanted. Other times that's a bad thing, and wanted (practice), other times that's a bad thing best avoided. Especially if it's a hurdle that keeps you from exercising.
- There's more to exercise than "exercise". I loathe the gym. Hate. It. I'll use it, but it's my least favorite. If you're not a sporty-person? Or am like me and hate the gym? Here's a short list of physically active things you might not have thought of as being "exercise" : Singing, many musical instruments, dance, circus arts, construction, gardening, martial arts (including gentle ones like Tai Chi), sailing, playing with toddlers, working with animals, et cetera. Pretty much any natural inclination you have, will have several areas that require a high degree of physicality. Say you're artsy? Curl up with a sketchbook all day? $4 will buy you a slab of Sheetrock/Drywall to tag. Fine motor drawing, becomes large motor painting. & Voila. A very sedentary activity becomes a very active one.
Have fun!
