News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

He's threatening to adjourn Congress because he wants to be able to appoint people to positions that require Congressional approval without that approval. Got to wonder who those people are because the Senate handles the confirmation process and it's controlled by the Republicans. If these people are so bad that his own party wouldn't vote for them, they must be pretty bad.

Apparently he has the authority to do this, although it's never been done in the history of the country. Sounds like his reasoning is totally bogus and I hope there's a way they can stop him. (I suppose that really belongs in the closed thread. Sorry, but I wanted to at least explain what's going on and why.)

I hope there's a way they can stop him

there is a way to stop him and if he becomes an autocrat, it will surely be used. If America wants a king, they will have one, if they don't, they will vote.
This is surely a big part of the worldwide impact of COVID, I think this belongs here, just not a lot of bantering about right/wrong in US politics. It is what it is, he will do what he does, we will be affected by it.

I don't understand, what is wrong with paying our respect and gratitude to those on the front line by staying home, stopping the spread and staying well?
You would think so!

Surely the biggest thanks we can give is not showing up in their waiting rooms and hospital departments.
It seems beyond the comprehension of a lot of people, to be fair, the messaging and lack of public education are contributing factors.

facebook

^Well how amazing. fb is going to curtail the posting of conspiracy theories and other dangerous ideas re covid19.

Shame they couldn't do that for all of the other stuff too?
Moderation becomes impossible at scale, so don't expect them to do a very good job of it.

This will be seen as censoring.

Just the other day I've seen a discussion in a local FB group where they sprouted all kinds of conspiracy theories and claimed you don't see any of this in the "mainstream media" because it's being censored.

Some things you can't fix. People will believe whatever they want.

Anyone else struggle with the mix of way too much experience of people not understanding PTSD and trauma effects in the past to now... like the world being confused/enlightened about why they are tired, stressed, can't think about the future, panicky, sad, etc? Like uh. It's what we here on the forums have all been living way too long and some of us have tried to explain in the past and only been disregarded. It's really hard to see so many struggle, PTSDers more than ever, and I also admit I have a little bit of a "we tried to tell you all" sort of annoyed and not really super appropriate internal response. I'm really glad though people are trying to educate everyone as much as possible and the growth of public education about the effects of trauma and stress. That will help now and in the future. It's just weird to struggle with symptoms of PTSD that most in my life could not understand to now them wondering, why can't I future plan or focus or why am I waking up crying so much... when that's been my daily ordinary life for way too long.

Totally missed my point people. Completely. Nanowrimo buried in semantics. The point was that there are multiple upon multiple upon multiple ways to show gratitude during this pandemic (both material and non-material), it's not a competition, and *they are all correct without needing to bash* one (no pun intended) in favour of another [insert personal preference]. And more than one can be done at the same time, they are not mutually exclusive, independent, and existing in a vacuum. All gratitude is right. Gratitude is the message, the display is just the packaging. Where I am, the short period of clapping and pot banging (30-60 seconds, approximately 7pm), as well as the parades (1-2 minutes), are very much appreciated. And I have seen health care workers dissolve into tears and are so moved about the display, because they needed to hear it. Even those that can't get outside at that moment are moved, because they can hear it. I have seen how those displays instantly change morale, because someone who needed it heard it (I have equally seen a health care worker moved to tears by an offering of a chocolate chip cookie, it's the display that she needed).
