From a personal point of view (maybe this belongs in a different thread) I find these overtly public acts acutely uncomfortable, and while I do not think for a moment that my discomfort (almost certainly trauma related) or that of others should influence anyone’s decision to take part, I do feel that public pressure to do so, and to support and agree with those who drive it, is unfair, and if it's making me feel more isolated, I’m probably not alone. It’s becoming a weekly occurrence in the UK, something I believe that at this point is being driven more by peer pressure than any genuine feeling. That’s my opinion (getting off my soapbox now).

I had to see someone I know in town. He said there are 14 cases here, that they “finally released the numbers”.

I felt a little unease lol.

But then I started to think. There is too much I don’t know to be any more concerned than I have been. That’s what rumors do.

My wife spends time with a family, very nice people and total townies. Completely plugged in, didn’t hear anything from them.
Don’t know where the info is from, are there tests blah blah.

First thing I wanted to do was go around blabbing about it because, misery loves company. So we will see. I might call the hospital again, my wife drives by there today and tomorrow. I don’t watch the news.

I assume so much I don’t know. For now I’m going to watch and see if anything changes, or I hear anything else.

Plenty of people are saying thanks in all sorts of ways aside from banging on a pot & howling?

Not heard of banging pots or howling. One child decided to make hearts for the health care workers, police, paramedics, and all of the first responders. They make a heart a day, saying thanks, and tape it to their window so that hopefully first responders will see it.

Many around here are also making things. Like a retired cop is making homemade face shields for the cops, who are short. Lots of people are making masks and donating them to the hospital and police. They all are getting used because Florida is so damn short of PPE.

That's how I've heard of Florida saying "thank you". Trying to make sure that our health care workers and first responders have the protection that they need to stay safe. Or at least safer then with nothing!

I agree with you. The first week, I thought it was nice, it was clapping only and I liked seeing my neighbours all at their windows. But the following week, I started to realise, clapping is not going to save the NHS. The best thing is to give the workers a pay rise instead. Last week at 8pm, I put my headphones on at full volume for 10 minutes so I didn't have to hear it.

^Well Boris tried the clapping too. Now he's experienced both the virus & the best the NHS has to offer & emotionally admitted that but for them he'd be dead. Lets see when he gets back to work if he'll cash them up & hand out pay rises?

I don't really know how well or poorly the NHS staff are paid. But, honestly there are some things money cannot compensate one for doing & at this particular time, this might be one of those jobs. But still, it'd be good to see all health workers paid well.

And I reckon teachers need a hand too - :hilarious: I'm sure now that we're in day two of second term of home schooling in some States & for some parents - a pay rise is exactly what they'd want to see their teachers get if only somebody would let them send their kids back to school???

It would be nice but I have doubts!

It's crazy, I saw it the other week, no audience whatsoever, it's just crazy! (And dull).

I don't use it so I'm not concerned.
Shame it takes a pandemic to prompt them to do something about this problem though.
But then again they're not responsible for idiotic ideas.
I'm fairly sure various governments have been applying pressure so perhaps that helped them along.

I kept seeing an article where people were campaigning get others to light sky-lanterns instead of clapping. Needless to say, firefighters were not impressed.
Sure. And you can also spend your entire relationship assuming that your partner loves you, even though they never say it. Sometimes you just need to hear them say it. And sometimes in the middle of a pandemic those on the front line need you bang on a pot for a minute (or howl at the moon?

It's sort of like memorials or funerals. It's really for the living. This howling and making a racket? It's really for those making the noise. Not meaning to suggest it's a funeral but rather it's really for those doing it, not whom they are doing it for. It's sort of like food drives. Best thing to give is $. A food bank can make a tiny amount of money go 4-5 times as far as if the donor spent it and gave canned food. But what do most people want to give? Canned food. Something physical, tangible, where they feel like they DID something. People stuck at home want to feel like they have done SOMETHING. Anything. And this thing? I don't know a single "essential" worker who feels great that everyone is making a racket at night. I know several who have to turn up music, TV, etc, every night because they are quiet rattled. (Many are developing acute stress or PTSD from the hell they are dealing with right now and a bunch of noise when they get home doesn't really help.) What really helps? A pay raise, a thank you card, staying home, etc, etc.

That all being said, most front line workers that I know seem to understand the I-need-to-do-something effect.

I spent my day trying on PPE for when I return to work in May/June. Broke down in tears. We are encouraging everyone to find/bring/prep whatever home made PPE they can come up with as a backup. People are dying in my job. We have high public contact and are legally mandated as critical infrastructure to stay open. I do not work in healthcare but in a role highly overlooked. I'm not so much concerned for myself but other staff. I've started asking friends and family to call local offices for people who do my job and demand PPE or other protections for all of those in my role. A freaking pay raise would be AMAZING. Do the funds or supplies for the PPE or pay raises exist? I dunno. But every time someone tells me they made a call, end an email, kept the issue in mind, or they are going to stay home or reduce contact - THAT makes it all easier and helps me sleep a little better and not be so concerned our staff. That stuff helps me feel like we are all in it together. The howling? Eh. I figure people need it. I need to do something about it all and they need to do something too. I'll just keep my music on around 8pm so I don't jump so high I hit the roof every time it starts up.

I got home from a shitty shift at exactly 8pm on the first Thursday that everyone clapped. So I stepped out my taxi and had everyone clapping n neighbours shouting that I'm a nurse n my name n shit. I'd totally forgotten clapping for the NHS was a thing. I think the idea is nice enough, I'm a way bigger fan of the musical hits like "can't you tell this lockdowns sending me outta my mind.. the moment you put on your masks doo doo" to the tune of big spender that I get treated to each shift ? or "you cannae let your granny catch the bug" to the tune of "you cannae shove yer granny off a bus".

If you're gonna embarrass us in public, please, make it funny :P
