Romance.....

She slept with me.
I went to sleep. I have nightmares and thrash.
She gets hit daily.
I love her so I distant myself and pushed her away.
We drifted apart.
Romance does not exist any longer.
I still thrash even alone.
Push myself away?
Distant myself from me?
Soul drifts apart from body.
Romance no longer as we.

My apologies for my late entry in this thread.

The media has grossly abused the image of a PTSD survivor, so much that the common folk truly have no idea what the truth is unless they have a family or friend that has to live with it.

A few weeks ago I saw a crappy flic about cops, I forget the name and title of the episode, and there the PTSD recipient was a Gulf War Vet who flipped out and started murdering people because his PTSD was triggered. And that is the farthest from the truth.

Then there are times when there are people that are so lazy that they want to be on welfare instead of working...they WANT to be disabled. I know they exist because I have met a few. I remember being told "no man, you don't understand!" when I chastised one fella for wanting to be disabled. Well, he's got an illness right there, make do with that.

I think that if you want to learn about PTSD, your best luck is a psychologist or psychiatrist. Because they will evaluate you, and if they decide to work with you, maybe you're not such a bad guy/gal after all.

I know I'm replying rather late to your post, but I watched a recent episode of Poldark where the character that plays a doctor seems to suffer from PTSD after his rescue from a French prison. Before I go on, I'm not a huge fan of the series, and as the scene began I was thinking to myself, "Oh, how badly with this suck?"

I was pleasantly surprised. The way he expresses his feelings gave me the impression that whoever wrote the script knew what they were doing. His life turned idyllic in seconds, something that here in reality might take many years, if ever. His character thereafter is unrealistically well-adjusted.

I'm working on some fiction too, which I've never done before and don't really have the slightest idea what I'm doing. My story too has a veteran only his PTSD developed before he ever went to war. He was sexually abused as a child and it was an experience in war that brought it all back to him.

I can relate myself to the sexual abuse at a young age. My story isn't a romance, though there's a romantic subplot. In short, I can put myself into him and and his feelings are actually mine. Otherwise, I made it all up. It is fiction after all.

You might want to check out this forum's sister site, MyCombatPTSD. You might find more relevant posts, first hand accounts, etc. that might help you develop your character.
I wish you the best of luck with your work.
