Hey.. I recently started Zoloft (25mg) about 4 days ago, and today when I took my dose at 6:30 am instead of 10 am, about an hour later I had a bad headache on only the right side of my head and I ended up vomiting 3 times at school. I was just wondering, if this is a side effect, how long will it last until it tapers off? What can I do in the meantime to prevent throwing up and/or the headache? Whatever advice I'm given I'll appreciate ! Thanks everyone.

I have been taking 100 mg of Zoloft a day for the past 6 months. I rarely take them at the same time each day. The only side affects I get is itchy skin on the odd occasion. If it is worrying you, it is best to ring your doctor and ask or look up Zoloft online and you can get a list of side affects that Zoloft can give.

It could be something else causing your head aches and vomiting, but it would be safer to ask a medical professional.

I think nausea and headach are fairly common with Zoloff. But I'm not sure - you could probably look it up or ask a pharmasist.

Everyone has some physical part that's their weakest point. I have a super-sensitive stomach/gut and I'm very drug sensitive overall.

I began taking Zoloff last August. I first split 25mg tabs in half for the first three days. On the forth day I took the whole 25mg tab. I had a minor head ache with a bit of nausea. Same for day five; however, I threw up twice that day. Day six, seven and eight: head ache and slight nausea. By day nine, no more nausea or headache. My dosage was been s-l-o-w-l-y increased over Sept/Oct without any more headach or nausea. I'm now at 62.5mg - aiming for 75mg before the end of this month. I wish I had started taking it sooner.

I had nausea when i first started taking Zoloft and changed dosages…it would last for about a week and then subside. I didn't get the headaches though unless I forgot to take it one day. So i think these are normal side effects (i've looked it up). If the nausea gets worse or continues longer than a week, I would call your dr.

I ended up coming off Zoloft because it would quit working and we kept having to up the dosages. However, everyone is different and I hope it works for you!

SSRI's commonly affect the gastrointestinal tract with adverse side affects such as nausea and diarrhea. Headaches are common initially from Zoloft, but if these continued, these should be reported to your doctor.

The vomiting however makes me wonder if this is not caused by too great of an initial dose of this drug, an allergy to it, or some drug interaction with it for which, as with many medications, there are numerous.

I definitely agree with those here who suggest taking the time to read up on Zoloft, calling a pharmacist, certainly speaking with your doctors with your concerns, plus about the vomiting.

Especially soon too. As well as if there may be, confusion.

Just my opinion, but you need to know exactly what you might expect along with and from any medication, ......before it all to easily moves fast forward.

Since you just started bitterfight with the Zoloft, you could perhaps easily get yourself a small notebook and take notes concerning.

Yeah, I looked up a list of it and rang my pharmacist up, and they said both the headache and the vomiting were side effects *sigh*.

Unfortunately, I can't do that with mine. I wish I could, but they are almost like the gel caps with the powder inside I guess. They can't be split. :(
By day nine, no more nausea or headache
However - THAT makes me feel more confident in continuing it. I know I won't see any effects until the 4-6 weeks mark but ugh. It's frustrating. I know it's not supposed to be immediate but oh god how I wish it was sometimes.

Me as well! Thank you for sharing your experience with it :)

I figured that much. My mother was on effexor (sp?) and she hated it from the side effects, but she went on ciprolex (sp?) and is great now. She had no side effects with it whatsoever.

I actually didn't miss a dose, I took it earlier than I normally would. This is my first time on antidepressants, or any medication for that matter, and the only other thing I am taking is Alesse (birth control). I really hope it's not an allergy, as I heard good things from friends about zoloft. Might I also add that, after the vomiting, I felt extremely... foggy. I felt like my brain was just stuffed with cotton. Apparently all side-effects according to my pharmacist.

I actually did this since then :)

Update: I talk to my T tomorrow, and then head to the pharmacists to discuss the side effects in greater detail. As you all said, I clearly need to be more informed about it. I'll post more as I know more. Thank you all so much.

Sertraline (Zoloft) has been found to be one of the meds that's most helpful for PTSD sufferers. Most doctors say to give it 30-45 days, but I had positive effect (in addition to the headache and nausea) in less than a week. Remember, I'm super-sensitive to drugs :cautious:

You could ask for tabs, rather than gel caps, if you wanted to. Everyone's different: it may or may not be "the thing" for you.

I'm glad to get so many replies of experiences with Zoloft. :) I discussed it with my Pharmacist and stopped taking it for around 3 days, and then I noticed it didn't go away. I took the local transit, and I found the cause behind it. Unfortunately, it was anxiety that was causing the nausea and the vomiting. I had a major panic attack on the transit, got off, and threw up in the local Starbucks. A few days after that, I threw up in my therapist's waiting room when I was so anxious. It's definitely not the Zoloft causing the vomiting, and I'm hoping that when I start again in a week or two, that the vomiting will cease and the Zoloft can begin to work a bit of its "magic". Apparently the headaches should go away in a week, and so should the "fog brain", and then I can see improvement in week 4 and onward. Thank God I will be out of school for Christmas vacation while I'm starting it up again. Anyways, hoping for the best! Wish me luck!

I really do have high anxiety, but I've numbed these feelings for a long time (6 years) which is why it's overflowing a lot lately. I'm learning to actually feel these feelings and not numb them with self harm and/or other substances. School is actually a massive trigger for me in itself, as most of my trauma occurred in a school.

It's hard for me to relax unfortunately, but my T is great in working with me with this. The soft music has been a great help for sure, whereas I struggle with the deep-breathing and end up hyperventilating and sending myself into a panic attack.

Thank you for the link, I will definitely check it out, and yes hopefully things start to look up soon. I start my medication in four days, so hopefully that will start to help. Thank you all so much.
