There is a script that you can import into your registry which can stop 10 installing
Borepatch gives it in a blog post here

He works in computer security.

My brother's payroll computer upgraded to 10 and completely bolloxed the payroll software and its records. Not funny for him or his employees, and expensive to correct.

I completely dumped MS when they stopped doing updates for XP I still have the original (under 100Gig ) hard drive with XP installed, for the odd occasions that I want something that's on it. The 10 year old machine is running really nicely with Linux installed on a new 2Tb hard drive. I haven't regretted changing. Linux asks nicely if it can update stuff and asks which stuff you want updating.

Linux is also very difficult for viruses to infect.

I'm actually considering going to one of the un-branded open source versions of Android for my tablet - because I'm sick of not being able to use it while google updates some spyware shite that I never even use.

This seems to be a new trend among several companies. My phone does this. When there is an update available it will nag me about 3 times a day, for around 2-3 weeks. Then it will just go ahead and install itself. :meh:

For my Ipad, when it detects a new IOS update is available, no matter what I'm doing, it will download this massive file There is no way to stop it, short of turning off the wi-fi connection. There is a way to delete the download, but the instant the device is connected to the wi-fi and charge cable, it will immediately download it again. :banghead:

The bloody thing will now nag you every 24 hours, kicking you out of whatever you were doing to push a button that says "please pester me again tomorrow." Naturally, there is no way to stop it doing that.:shifty:

I wouldn't be this pissed off about it, except IOS 9 Is way to resource intensive for a 3rd gen Ipad. It's become painfully slow at everything. There is also no way to roll back. Not impressed.:bored:

The bloody samsung, oh boy....! :cautious:
Since the last firmware update, has installed a tonne of apps I won't use, but can't delete.
The most infuriating thing it began doing was, to notify me of an app optimization feature. (It does actually work reasonably well). It kept refreshing things. Very annoying to me, so I turned it off. Next day, notification about optimizer, close, next day same thing, over and over.

Finally it badgers me into turning the feature on again. New notification. Telling me I have the optimizer running.... Okay....?
Next day, same thing. It actually had a notification to tell me it was running normally. Naturally, you can't disable this notification. It gets better... After hours of google searches, I find a way to hide the notification. HA! Victory is mine.:sneaky:
Nope. Spoke too soon....

Next day.
Turn on phone. THERE WAS A NOTIFICATION TO TELL ME I HAD A HIDDEN f*ckING NOTIFICATION!!!:arghh; AARRGHH!!

Never again Samsung. Never again.

Sorry for the novel.

Never again Samsung. Never again.

For something as popular as a samsung, you can get opensource Android and firmware to replace the proprietry stuff

Have a look at the full site while you are there. some of the stuff is not the most up to date, and some of the latest apps are not up on F droid, but I still find it a lot less hassley than telling google absolutely everything that I'm up to.

Samsungs in particular can have the modem activated by software without you knowing - the opensource OS and firmware cures crap like that.

Interesting article @Ms Spock !

I'm running Windows 7. I really like it. It works fine. I think I'd happily run it forever. There's nothing I want to be able to do that I can't do. I really don't understand the constant pressure to "upgrade". (But then, I said that about XP too.)

Does anyone here have Windows 10 on their machine because they WANT it? And, if you do, do you like it? What's the difference? (I hear there's a LOT of difference and I'm skeptical that Microsoft has created another one of it's operating systems from Hell.)

Reason #54,731 that I despise Microsoft.
Dump them
admittedly, you'll need to get your friends to go to another voip, as MS has made skype so that it is extra difficult to install on anything that isn't MS or android

The linuxes are good - and all of the programs you want are free to install from the various repositories. some of the stricter linuxes like debian are a bit sticky about proprietry software like flash
https://prism-break.org/en/all/#operating-systems

For anyone who wants to get nerdy about operating systems, there are still people who are continuing to develop Amiga and DOS, and about 100 other operating systems.
Windows is only popular on PCs,

little embedded devices (like routers and rasberry Pi) and big computers like internet servers, mostly use Linux,

both BSD and Android are forks from Linux. OSX is largely a fork from BSD.

I have windows 7 which I am really happy with. I have been getting offers to update to windows 10 and always X it out. So far it is just an annoyance for me. I was not aware that it was automatically updating without the users permission.

Thank you for bringing this this one up. I have learned a lot.
