Affection and Emotional Involvement

I believe withdrawal can be common amongst those suffering from PTSD. I also understand that people with PTSD sometimes shut off their emotions from others while trying to deal with episodes.

What I don't understand, and sorry in advance as sometimes I can tend to think too laterally, is how come there is such a large and open display of affection and emotion amongst people who hardly know each other? Sometimes a new member posts hugs and kisses in their very first posts. Is it the relief of feeling safe that allows such an openness so early on? I just find it doesn't quite add up for me as I know so many here have spoken of trust issues yet openly display affection to people who they have only ever read a post by....is it safer to be open with people here as it is not as close and personal as real life?

Perhaps I'm just nerdy and my thinking is different but from my experiences of abuse I found I tend to be very cautious before showing affection to those I am not familiar with?!

I think that despite the fact that I've mentioned several times that I don't trust anyone, I actually do feel safe here. Really safe. I don't think it's an issue of online versus real life interaction, because what I feel from the people here is authenticity. There's so much support, instantly, and it's non-judgmental (98% anyway). But I do think writing also helps (as opposed to verbalizing things), and writing makes it easier to open up and share my thoughts, regardless of whether it's online or not. And I love that people don't generally tell you what to do unless you ask them specifically, they just listen and encourage you instead. And I love that people here really do care, and I think that's why I have an emotional connection with the people here. In the "real" world, it's incredibly difficult to find people that truly care. So I would say the real beauty of the website is the people, not the website, but the website's benefits (such as high security, super-critical moderation) are really great, too.

Okay, as I think about it, I realize that I only interact with a handful of people on this forum so far, and there are a ton more that are just lurkers. Honestly, I have wondered about how strange it is that counselors aren't on this site, and I wonder how many people just sit on the sidelines and observe. That does creep me out, but I think I've been able to tuck that away and not think about it, which is probably not healthy. In fact, I don't know much about you, Nicolette, or about Anthony. Again, I've just sort of taken the blue pill (Matrix) and not really paid attention to who you are. Afterall, I can only take so much paranoia, and when I joined this site just a few weeks ago, I was in a really difficult spot, so I was kind of desperate to join.

So that gives YOU a lot of power. But I'm curious, Nicolette... As the moderator/controller of this website, how does your position make you feel in relation to the people that post here?

Because this is not real.....You really aren't interacting with others here. It's just words, typed on a screen. But, ask the people here to meet in a public place to *get to know* each other....I would bet that VERY few would show up!!!!!! So it is *safe* for many as they aren't actually interacting with a live person.

I even know members that have added the word "hugs" to the end of their post, but meant it in a very sarcastic way, so not everything is as it seems.....

Aaron, I am only a moderator and, if you want to choose to use the word controller, Anthony holds all the powers as it is his website/forum. I don't see my position as one of power, I see it as one of trust from Anthony given to me in order to assist him in making sure this place is safe from spammers and does not get out of control with the way people interact with each other.

My position in relation to other members....well, I think it depends on other's points of views. Some people act differently to me when they find out I am Anthony's fiance, others when they see the title under my name. To me, well, I'm just the same but have to be more cautious in how I approach some things due to other's view of me. For example some people have reacted harshly due to me giving them an infraction and taken it personally when I'm just doing my job and following the guidelines of the forum.

Hope that has given you some insight but back onto topic I think.....

Wendy, thanks for your input.....your response is along the lines I was thinking.

Sorry for that last post. These are just thoughts I've had, but I don't mean to attack you. I didn't mean to make that come across as an interrogation. The Internet is a very real place. Real people, just a different alleyway, and I guess what I was getting at should have actually been directed toward Anthony.

On a related note (or maybe what I'm actually trying to get at)... I've never actually had a conversation with Anthony, but when I read some of his stuff it really sounds like he's a professional counselor (which I guess he can take as a compliment). But it just kind of confuses me because I haven't actually read his personal story concerning PTSD, and then I think, "wait, why aren't there a bunch of counselors on this site? They could really learn a lot if they monitored this place." And then I start thinking about all the possibilities and i get paranoid. I guess I just need to gain more knowledge, and this doesn't have anything to do with you or Anthony specifically, but has to do with me. This thread just gave me the opportunity to address it. Again, sorry. I didn't mean anything malicious.

Aaron

People on here are echoes of real life. Some are able to fake all that huggy luvvy shit for strangers - while others feel it sincerely. I'm not capable of it, so my popularity will never go above the initial little square. Just like in real life, people have their favourites, for example, Anthony may interact with some members quite a bit while never ever acknowleding others. Some people don't even know why they are here, so maybe they lurk and never announce themselves. Others make great friends.

I think too, your personality comes through, even though you have PTSD. You might genuinely feel for others, but never say a word--or you might become the darling of the boards.

Others with PTSD might be so used to pleasing and appeasing others that they do go out of their way to constantly *hug* or *kiss* others, because that's what they've been trained to do.

One thing I've noticed is that it's a relief to find others who are just as scarred and with similar issues. So we can share similar stories with a bit of anonymity. Maybe sometimes there's an outpouring of suppressed emotions as a result...

IMHO, most of the time we are able to come here, express how we are feeling, vent and find someone who "gets" how we are feeling---real or not! I still remember what happened when I typed in PTSD into my search engine and this site popped up.

A wave of relief swelled over me like I have never felt. I read stories just like mine. I read stories unlike anything I could imagine. So then I felt "Well, I don't belong here. I do have PTSD but these people are in real pain."

But as time went by and I learned more from the site I began to realize that I was not alone in this struggle and I was not crazy. This thing, this ptsd did exist and I had it and so did others. I was no longer a freak. NO ONE was telling me to pull myself up by my boot straps and move on!

This discovery did cause me to feel favorable emotions towards some of the people I met here. It IS easier to open up here, it IS easier to feel something here. I guess my best example is my memory loss. As much as mother tries to understand my issues, she just does not get it. She thinks my memory loss is normal. IT IS NOT!

The people where know that and I am able to express myself without being told that what I am feeling is wrong. For that----I have given hugs and will continue.

In conclusion, we are all so glad to have found someone or something that does not judge us and "gets" what is going on in our heads that we express our gratitude as best we can.

Hey Nicolette....

I am quoting you now...And will try to give an idea of where it is that I am coming from with reagrd to "Affection" and stuff here.(this is real scarey)..

"I believe withdrawal can be common amongst those suffering from PTSD. I also understand that people with PTSD sometimes shut off their emotions from others while trying to deal with episodes. " Nicolette

Before I came here I was absolutely terrified and completely shut-down from certain emotions, the loneliness for me is pretty bleak. I have not been able to discuss any aspect of what has been happening to me with anyone in the real world. And I have become very isolated.

"What I don't understand, and sorry in advance as sometimes I can tend to think too laterally, is how come there is such a large and open display of affection and emotion amongst people who hardly know each other? " Nicolette

When I have read *hugs I have tended to think on them as a kind of solidarity. That yes finally thank-god someone does kind of know what it is I am talking about and maybe feeling. And I have taken them with what I have "known" of that person.

And while they may not know exactly...I do kind of get the feeling from what I have read of them, the way they have written their posts etc that they may be in some small way be a connection, and that in some way they are with me.

I have not felt connected to the outside world in a very long time...

The thing is I think to an extent I have to believe that I "get" others and that they "get" wher we are coming from.

I am opening up and it does and is making myself so vulnerable when I write here- not just my diary...I have to absolutely hope that I am as safe as I can be. I am writing about my innermost fears and hopes. I need to believe that I am amongst people that are with me. And it is emotional and tiring and it does feel good to be comforted in some way no matter how small the internet may be as a connection.

I used the sentence "have my back" in a thread this week...I didnt mean it as in "on here"...protecting me or anything...
...I meant that when I leave here and take their advice or encouragement, that they are with me even though I am completely alone. When I have had to speak up against something for instance trying and not being able to get therapy,I have been well, really pretty terrified. And I do "feel" supported to some extent by having read someone elses encouragement.

Up until recently I have been afraid to "speak up", and for so long not able to speak up, maybe because I have so little confidence (or whatever it is). Well "thinking" that someone else is "behind me" and supportive of me has helped me in some ways to be able to believe that what I am saying or asking for ...well that its ok Im not "off my head" because Im asking. Someone else in this world doesnt think that I am being unreasonable in asking. Which is so often how I have been treated by the professionals.

"Sometimes a new member posts hugs and kisses in their very first posts".

Yeah maybe some new people are not sure what to write there. So used to writing hugs etc in emails and blogs and whatever to friends. They see that others have written it and they do to.

"Is it the relief of feeling safe that allows such an openness so early on?"

Maybe it is.
I cant rememeber the last time I was held or hugged or anything that was comforting....and in the instances when I have read this in relation to me. I have taken it in hopefully the manner it has been sent... comforting. I have some idea as to whether it is or not because I have read what the person has said previously, to me and also to others.

"I just find it doesn't quite add up for me as I know so many here have spoken of trust issues yet openly display affection to people who they have only ever read a post by....is it safer to be open with people here as it is not as close and personal as real life?"

I dont know how safe it is...I feel like I am making my self intensely vulnerable...every word, every pause, every thought, everything I write is bringing down another part of a wall. It is almost like in some way I am preparing to feel again. And maybe this place is the safest for me to be able to try out those feelings or ways of being...trust, friendship-(friendliness). I am so out of my comfort zone here and yet I am trying and that for me feels good. Like I am moving forward.

"Perhaps I'm just nerdy and my thinking is different but from my experiences of abuse I found I tend to be very cautious before showing affection to those I am not familiar with?!"

I do believe that there is a difference between affection and comforting.
And I think to an extent we are able to connect in some way, and be able to have some small hope of trust...and I prefer "understanding" rather than "familiar with".

I think She-Cat is probably right in saying; "I would bet that VERY few would show up!!!!!! " ...

...but I dont think anyone is asking that anyone else show up in the real world, The thing I have found is that people are "showing up " time and again here. We put ourselves "out there" for each other in a way that I find quite beautiful.

The world that I have seen- the real world, has been crap for me (and that is sooo a total understatement). The things that have happened to me have shattered what I wanted to believe the world to be.

I believe I was in a very real danger....actually more than danger, I was finding that there was absolutely no point in my continuing on this planet. All I saw were people that were so completly shit to each other and there were others that just stood by and watched as it happened. Here I have found something that maybe makes me think the world isnt completely shit. I to an extent am seeing that people can be decent to each other.

That compassion does exist...and while this isnt real world it is part of my world now.

And I dont believe this..."So it is *safe* for many as they aren't actually interacting with a live person".
Some perhaps, but I dont want to think many.
While maybe some people are just typing off something to get whatever validation they can in some way and not really caring who it comes from or what is being said to them. I dont believe all are. And I really dont believe that to be true.

I am only able to accept that maybe its not everyone that is sincere because we are on the internet and no matter that I want to believe the whole world to be warm and fuzzy...it just isnt ...so yes not veryone is genuine or caring or whatever.

But I do believe it might be more than she-cat thinks...well I hope so.

I have sat and thought about others while I have been reading ...I have sat and thought about the pain I have felt when writing (or reading) and its no fun. I know I have sat and been raw at typing here tear stained and shaking, and when I read someone else telling each of us their pain I "see" them and understand to the extent I can, and ...

I have thought what is it I am going to write. How can I help this person to believe that In some way they are going to make it...(And I believe they can make it..I believe that somehow we can)...how can I make it myself. How can I give some useful shread of hope or advice...(when I feel like total crap myself)... well I read, and read some more and maybe someones strength or hope or something, maybe tenacity, something comes through in their writing and thats what gives me hope and I try to convey that to the person I am "talking" with.

Any way doesnt it in some small way help us in our walk being able to help when someone else needs it? We are going on this almost together...when we can encourage each other that has to be a positive affirmation to some degree that all is not lost

I find it a bit weird too Nicolette. I have seen the value of smilies since I joined here though. I used to hate them. I use the wink more than any others just to show when I'm teasing.

I feel a bit unsure of people when they use hugs and kisses a lot on here. I feel they are a bit insincere.

I feel a bit unsure of people when they use hugs and kisses a lot on here. I feel they are a bit insincere.

Agreed. We don't have to be that close in order to support one another, and I don't like to rush intimacy even online. That said, I have plenty of friends who kiss hello and goodbye and whatnot as soon as they meet somebody, so perhaps there's a little of "to each her own" in there, too.

So I read Nicolette's title, and it sparked my interest. So even though I don't really have enough time to continue now reading anything yet beyond She-Cat's post, at this point in time, without becoming overwhelmed and not being able to ever post, I'm pushing myself to respond now, before I cannot.

So Wendy, I reach your post and I stop, Yikes was my initial feeling to this:

Because this is not real.....You really aren't interacting with others here. It's just words, typed on a screen.

People perceive and respond to things differently.

If this is not real and honest, interactive, communication here, for others and me, any of whom I may or may not ever get to know beyond these technoloical communications, then I have no business being here.

Quite frankly, this makes me feel sad too, bc I wish from all my heart; I wish us all well. And, I'd approach almost anyone of you, unless my guts repeatedly shouted at me differently, and I'd be myself.

Alot of times, I don't even get to entirely be and express myself here, bc I've responded to numbers of others threads from the heart and cannot figure out how to then post such in proper time, bc life back here demands an instant response to one need or another; might add that this has been quite frustrating to me.

Anyhow, it's been through interactions here that I've exchanged phone numbers and have spoken more than once with 5 different people over time. Two of those conversations have since left the door open for either one, to call me at ANYTIME, if they so desire. And, I too call these ladies, and am now reminded that it would be awesome to do so more often. I do call, it's just that I just don't want to call, perhaps bother people, unless they want to be bothered. Also, true is time-management problems on my end, and real ones. However, both women are truly beautiful people.

Also there is, another forum member, whom she and I talked, unfortuantely only once, but it was for hrs. and if it was not for sheer exhaustion on the part of both of us, we likely would've continued. I feel fortunate to have spoken with her via phone, bc she's a great woman. Honest, frank and f....u...n.....n.....y. And, what I do is I trust, when my guts say trust; I trust that she's doing well.

Lately, I've again been writing about past trauma, but hell that's all past, but when I get to writing about it, I do get temporarily confused as to whether it's past or not, when I am re-living the depths of that once suppressed emotional pain and the present symptoms that it invites; such symptoms though are all temporary for me, it's just that I keep writing and writing and writing about more and more and more. (laughs)

But, ask the people here to meet in a public place to *get to know* each other....I would bet that VERY few would show up!!!!!!

Wendy, You and I could meet, perhaps nic and beatle as well. Perhaps we could all measure an equal distance from our homes to a public point at which we could go out for lunch or supper and all go to a movie or something. You name it, I'm up for it.

The only issue I forsee arising for me, is if it got dark out, as I've little nighttime vision, and I certainly do not trust my friend beatle's vision more than I do my own. My problem is I get on the highway, and I cannot see the exits to ever get off the highway, but seeing the lines on either side at night, I can do well. (smiles) No offense beatle, but you know, how I feel about your driving and peripheral vision. And, if beatle being a male is a concern, well then beatle has enough friends and acquaintances back home.

Beatle, if you're reading this, is this so, or no. It use to be so, as you've made more friends then I now have. ......It's a family, children / school and extended family thing, for the most part that makes maintaining friendships sometimes most challenging.

Though having said this, I don't disagree with you Wendy in that likely very few people would show up, but I believe some would.

I even know members that have added the word "hugs" to the end of their post, but meant it in a very sarcastic way, so not everything is as it seems.....

If that's an intrepation with no certainty, communication, guts or certainty to it then well, maybe it's nothing more than a misunderstanding. However, anything's possible and if so, well then........IMO, I think that's a very sh'tty thing to do.

I must say I do agree that not everthing is as it seems. To keep this simple now, an example: I wanted in on that thread, ....which went something like: Does It Sometimes Seem that Ptsd Makes Things Appear that the Sufferer Don't Care? ....Something like that, I don't know,

but the thread was closed before I could find time to participate. So, as for things not appearing as they're. Yes! I identify. For example, it might appear that I could careless or very little about many here upon the forum, some in which I'm yet to ever respond to in their great threads or questions which they've asked or created, but this is not as it appears. In fact, this couldn't be any further from the truth on this end.

Rather I care very much, but one person is one person and Life is happening through me, around me, involving me and affecting me all the live long time, and my my only recent complaints, but a consistent struggle, is that there is not enough time in a day, plus a few people and 'institutions'-one such being school, back home here requesting, demanding and asking for more and more from me; None of which is my immediate family either.

I keep my home clean so that I can enjoy it, ....working my arse off in doing so, and the doorbell rings sometimes daily, seldom if ever a day or two in between and in walks people with expectations. Ouch, I say. Lately, I feel like a maid, servant, childcare provider, teacher and therapist, (none of which is me) and that my home is thought of as a guest home for others to enjoy, (rather than for my family and I as well) Regardless just some of more, which I regularly do and accomplish.

It's nice being me here on the forum when I'm here, but this too is too often hindered by me owning, re-evaluating and exposing my traumas.

Anyhow, Yes, Yes and another yes as to being long-winded here, but I am speaking from the heart, so long-winded or not, oh well.

Wendy, I'll be in touch via PM.

...........I'm yet to have read beyond your post Wendy.

So I'm going to want to get back to reading this thread, but must discipline myself into action back home now.

Take Care.

Sincerely,
goingonhope

I have only read Nic's post 1 but am responding.

Nicolette:

It is funny this is coming up, because sometimes I find it much easier to type and think to express my feelings. Sometimes when I can't express them clearly or say things out loud without discomfort I will express them in my diary on the forum. My therapist is amazed at what I will say on this forum but have difficulty even expressing them to him. He even said "It's amazing what people will share with complete strangers in this setting." Referring to my openess.

I guess it is wierd really. But it does feel safer because of the seperation both in distance and anononimity (sp?). But I do find it odd as you do. If we were all in a room together or even each had our own room on a hotel floor I am sure it would be totally different!

But that is one of the things that is great about the forum. Being able to take risks with thoughts and feelings, getting feedback and gaining confidence in what are beliefs are from our personal experiences. It's kind of like a field testing zone of safety to express emotions without severe repercussions as many of us have had in past experiences.
