Research False Memories Not As Easy To Plant As Touted

I tried to check out one of the "research" scientists Julia Shaw on fb and she's interestingly not available yet she's selling a book. Hmmmmm

A lot of public figures avoid Facebook or use special privacy settings so they can't be found. Not sure that really says anything about her credibility.

As for false memories, I don't pretend to know how easy/difficult it is to plant false memories, but I do think it's always wise to avoid trying to remember something that doesn't want to be remembered. When I first started remembering one of my traumas, I kept asking my therapist to help me remember it and she refused, saying it would come to the surface on its own. It still hasn't. But there was a period when I did try to remember, and a lot of the stuff I kept remembering was all messed up in my head. It's like the memories of very real things that did happen were taken out of context, and I kept seeing abuse where there actually was none. So I can understand why there is such a fear of false memories in the industry today. In my case, no one was planting any ideas, I was just recalling things incorrectly.

I think this is just one of those topics where there will always be two opposing camps and we'll never really know with absolute certainty which side is right.

I absolutely believe in false memories. My whole life was driven by a HUGE false memory that has taken me (to date), 10 years to crack. Still working on it.

And the people who loved me and cared about me kept feeding the false memory. Over and over and over again.

'Prior to your adoption, you were loved and cared about. They gave you up because they loved you more than their own sense of happiness, as it is so difficult to give up a child.' lol.

I think what I am trying to say that a false memory can include 'I love you' (and you believe it, as you are getting smashed against the wall or penetrated by a loved one when that should be no part of the relationship. Or, even better, 'you are a horrible person - look what you are making me do to you.'

I suppose those are false facts, although it can become a filter with which we see everything, in a skewed way.... with a bias that is not our own.

Tragic. I don't necessarily believe that a false memory has to be directly related to an event, but can include certain truths about us that affect us profoundly.

I believe that it can happen but has to be under certain circumstances and has to be over time. I don't think some stranger alone can convince you that you've done something or lived something you didn't.

If you read the articles the problem is with the methods. The woman that I was trying to get the fb for actually used family members to help her in her lie. And even that barely worked. So when people start remembering things and people tell them they are full of it, can we really deny what they remembered? ( does that make sense)

In the grand scheme of things, our mind constantly tweaks memory, even the common every day stuff. It seems difficult sometimes to accept any memory as completely true if you think about it.

I think what helped me a lot was when I questioned my T about how I could accept all that was coming up, she suggested an approach of, " what if," let's move on like it is.

It is unsettling that we can not truly know the full truth. I wonder if hypnosis brings forth real memory?

It's well known that not ALL of memory is true. What these people are implying is you can't trust ANY of your memories. Which makes no sense.
