Using Accomodations

I HAVE accommodations. They are on file with the university where I work. I can ask for them. I have one that I use daily: a service animal.
I NEED to stay home. I need to be able to work from home for a while. This is an accommodation available to me.

They just hired a new department head. He's seen my service animal and is accepting of that and hasn't ASKED any questions about why I need him or hell, even what he does for me. I don't know how to say I need this other accommodation right now. I have no idea how.

Hell, I'm impressed I'm still able to make complete sentences.

I suspect that saying "I've been told that working from home is available to me if I need it, and I feel like I need it" is all you'll need to say. It seems to me that your manager respects your privacy and is unlikely to have a lot of questions.

"My disability requires me to work from home at this time. It's an approved accommodation. What I can do so that there is a smooth transition?" or some other proactive question about how to go ahead and utilize this accommodation.

That skips over any debate about the accommodation - if it's already been approved then handle it like it is the settled matter that it is. If he pushes it, then you can ask for an explaination for his denial.... and if you don't know how to respond in the moment to the explaination, you could ask to address it later and take it from there.

If talking out loud is hard, try emailing it. It creates an easy paper trail if you run into snags.

I really, really love this. It states what you need, and gives him not just something to do & feel useful/in control about from a managerial standpoint, but is clear and simple direction, and is soooooo "Teamwork!" showing you as an active and considerate employee. Love it.
