It sounds like it's non-directive or basically the client leads @James McGregor.

There are so many different types of therapy and approaches out there, sometimes it's hard to know what's going to work until you've tried it.

Im doing that at the moment, its ok if you know what you want to talk about, mine had to change her approach and start asking me questions as we werent getting anywhere

thanks, thats good to know - that sounds good, i think i know pretty well what i want to talk about, but like you that might not be sustainable for too long, be interesting to see how it works out

This is my Ts main approach. I don't have a lot of other previous therapy experience to compare with, but I find it useful.

Thanks, do you have space to discuss the past? I know.some forms of therapy don't encourage this, but for me it's what I'm looking for

Yes, nothing is off limits with my T. If it's effecting me then she would encourage me to bring it. I feel that I am at the centre of the therapy and that it is adapted to me, rather than me trying to adapt to a preconfigured structure, if that makes sense?

Person centred therapy is basically a therapy directed by the client. It's a much misunderstood type of therapy where there's a sense that the therapist doesn't ask questions, give opinions, or that it's a bit wishy washy.

In fact it's a relationship based therapy where the therapist is wholly themselves and fully accepting of you. The idea is that the relationship allows you to become more authentic and accepting of yourself including your trauma experiences, the feelings you have about your trauma and it's impact. In the hands of an experienced therapist it's an incredibly powerful form of therapy and literally the only thing that's worked for me. And yes the therapist can and should ask questions...

You can talk about anything as much as you like, the therapist should work at your pace and negotiate what helps and what doesn't. it can take a while to get into because we're not used to taking the lead in therapy but it can work really well.
