So I just wanted to vent and see if you guys have any thoughts
Today I got in a debate with someone about medicine. And long story short, his argument was basically about how modern medicine was corrupt and there was no need for pills to solve medical issues especially mental health problems and that everything could be fixed with holistic medicine. He said depression only comes from your enviornment has nothing to do with genetics and you can cure yourself.
I got very hurt by this. I know many people including myself who need medicine to better themselves.
It made me feel very weak.
Any thoughts?

I would first ask for his evidence to support his statements.

Second, there is some truth in pills for mental health, and there has been much controversy over depression specifically, but that is in relation to treating it with pills claiming serotonin levels are the cause, when their is actually no such medical evidence to support that case. That is one case though and does not apply to the entire of medicine.

Pills keep people alive longer today. That is fact. Most people who rely on daily pills to moderate their blood pressure alone... if they didn't have them would be dead within a month, or near enough, from heart attack, let alone the other problems it stems.

Are pills oversold? Is their corruption with medicine? Yes, there is evidence to support case by case basis.

Does this apply to the entire medical field and mental health? No. No it does not. There is far more evidence to support positive outcome than negative for many facets.

I would slap the man and tell him to wake up to himself.

Thanks for your post Mairin. We are all different thank goodness and what works for me may not work for you. I am always looking for some thing new. I have had pharma medications that work and lots that didn't. I have tried many holistic and natural medications some worked but most didn't. Medication is driven by profit no matter if it is holistic or other wise so it is buyer be ware. I think that people need to be open to trying anything that could help. Very difficult decisions to make. Thanks for the topic.

I get this from my parents and siblings, all of whom are pretty hardline pharma bad, medication bad, solve everything naturally. My brother especially, who wants our family to stop poisoning ourselves with psychiatric medication and go on a mystical ancient Indian diet that will improve our lives and health or something.

Holistic means they include everything, including the stuff that doesn't work. I'm not a fan of alternative medicine. Just because pharmaceutical companies can be corrupt doesn't mean that snake oil suddenly works, or that the companies that sell it are somehow now ethical, or not a big business.

Thank you guys
I do agree you need to find what works for you. I just feel like it is very belittling to say mental health problems can be cured with your own mind. Yes, you can work very hard to better yourself and find resources to help you, but your mind is so complicated and there is so much we don't know about mental health, there is no easy fix and I have found medicine that really helps me so I just hate when people tell me it's so bad for me shouldn't be around.

Love this thread!
Not only would that guy have to provide proof he would have to answer some questions.
What is his history. Was he subjected to years of abuse that rewired his brain in order to survive?
I am trying a more holistic approach to my constant body pain. And seeing good results. Watching foods that make me feel crappy and stop eating them. Things like that.
I have two family members that harp on certain meds being a crutch. Simply told them if they had a chronic broken leg..they would use a "crutch". My brain is broken. And YES I will use the crutch to live .
Sorry it made you feel weak. You are anything but weak.
And like @Esterio shared some of any of it works..and some of any of it doesn't.
You do not ever have to defend yourself for your choices for your healing journey.
And YES the pharma industry is a money making machine. I don't even care. Many of us need meds to live.
So when this dude finds a cure for PTSD..tell him to give us a call. And tell him we want something quick and easy!

IMO! Modern medicine works, but has many drawbacks also. I'm just not sure that for depression it's helpful. I think the biggest issue for me with most drugs, is the side effects. You are prescribed a med for something, it causes side effects and they want to give you another med to "help" with the side effects with the first drug.

This to me, just starts a shitstorm of events. It adds to the anxiety that you already have and it becomes a tumbleweed that just keeps growing. My other issue with many drugs today is that they can prolong life. Ok, and I guess if a person wants to live longer, and is pain free go for it. It's guality life that matters to me, not how long I can live.

Sadly none of the meds I tried worked for me, I had suicidal ideation on most and I think my doctor has given up trying anymore on me since the last effects.

Ok so I am on both sides of this. Heck all sides of this. Identifying as a person with depression in my teens/early twenties allowed me to learn more about myself, identify symptoms, learn from others with similar symptoms, find appropriate treatment providers, finally take charge of my own mind and life. This shifted/ merged with a realization that heck, I am smart enough-- I can be one of the providers. So then I found meaning in setting a huge academic and career goal for myself. I am now on the other side of achieving these goals, 12 years of grad school plus training, specialization etc. And in doing my job I've continued to learn more and more about myself by helping others on the path.
I now see where our meds can allow a person the clarity and breathing room to leave an abusive family of origin, can be the connection to a provider who becomes a mentor or an alternate attachment figure, can be the tool to realize that there is so much more underneath this seemingly simple diagnosis handed to a young person.
On the flip side I see the harm when families use diagnoses and medications to maintain control, to continue the family story that suppresses the DV, the incest, the discord, the neglect. When the person on medication may be the "identified patient" but frankly they are the sanest person in the family. They felt the anxiety, the sorrow, the fear, the pain, the confusion, the loss.
I agree that we still need meds though. I do. Now realizing the depth of my own suffering before I could even speak, I am unsure whether unraveling all of the stuff will allow me to stop my medications or if the way my memory and cognition organized in the setting of abuse and neglect will always result in a need for some psychopharm support. Only time will tell.
In kids meds can allow them to remain grounded enough to learn what their triggers are and to learn how to trust, how to ask for help. But they can also be a distraction to the systematic problems we try to ignore.
I would not want to go back to the times when we did not have these tools available. But I am thankful we are in a time where we are seeing the impact of neglect, the importance of early attachment in adult relationships and the gifts of the variety of treatments and healing available to many of us. As more of us come into the light, the more we can motivate through living our truth to do the same.
Case by case. Each one of us an individual with different wants, different needs, different stories.
