A Strange Tip For Bad Nightmares

OK this may be a strange tip but its worked for me and maybe it can help someone else:

I leave the TV with the volume set so I can just barely make out the voices. I leave it tuned to a channel that has innocuous content and then go to sleep. Somehow the voices seem to penetrate into my sleeping brain and sidetrack the nightmares. Rather than dreaming I'm trapped in a mass grave I'll end up dreaming about how to make a patio or the "History of Sugar".

My s/o sleeps with the tv on too. He is a combat veteran and any little noise puts him in a hypervigalant state. So glad it's working for you!! Sweet dreams...

I do similar but loud music since I need to also drown out the voices while I'm awake.

It leads to me not having dreams, and also, losing more and more of my hearing :p

Yeah, I have stumbled upon that too, just a little waves, music, serotonin waves, or even lengthy documentaries help to side track the night mares.

If the material is really interesting I can't sleep, then I find myself listening to it, hihi.

But with the horrendous nightmares I have had I should try that. In my nightmares I have died now all week, so realistic, not outlandish in any way either, but very realistic depictions and parts of those nightmares even repeated themselves in my everyday suffering with PTSD.

I hate them, god do I hate them, waking up screaming.

Hi Freedom Fighter. Not sure if you take any meds but you may want to look into Prazosin. We use it here occasionally when J is having a bad time with nightmares. It helps to suppress them and/or make it so he doesn't even remember them. It has really helped him. Sorry you're having such a hard time with it. Good luck!!

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but every time I have a nightmare, I process it with my therapist. I never have that nightmare again. In fact, I hardly ever have them any more. Disturbing dreams, yes. Nightmares, no.

That would be very hard for me to do. It would take me a while to adjust because I would be worried about missing a sound that might alert me to danger. At the same time I want to train myself to not be like that and wake up at the slightest noise.

@leehalf

2nd that on the prozasin for nightmares... had some side effects but worth it in comparison... trying it again after a month of no sleep. Ive tried EVERY sleeping pill you can name and ONLY prozasin helped my sleep talking and nightmares.
