I think anyone who stockpiles that much (converted) automatic firepower had some intense internal struggles to contend with, or some sort of unwelcome medical diagnosis...?

Which is, of course, NO justification. Again, as I've already stated this amount of firepower is a mechanism for violence that would otherwise occur on a much smaller and manageable scale or perhaps even not occur at all. Yes, I believe it is the guns (easy access), AND the people.

I hate the event responsible for this thread and to some degree, the thread itself. It makes me angry, sad, and several shades beyond wretchedly frustrated.

Stephen Paddock was a registered Democrat in Florida, a registered Democrat in Nevada and aa aggressive Democrat anti-Trump activist in Nevada. He targeted conservatives at a Country and Western Music event. Conservatives take note, wack job extremist Democrats are coming for us. Its just like the attack in Washington, that just happened, on the conservative caucus Republican softball game that almost killed Rep. Steve Scalise. What an insane world we live in.

This was not some anti trump stunt....this man was not attacking a political group. I don't see how it would matter which party he supported and I do think we need to avoid that dramatization and stick with the facts at hand. I don't know what the answer is, but I do believe that if a person wants to commit such a massacre, they will find a way....could kill 50 people by running a large truck through a crowd.

He clearly had no conscious about what he was doing....which is a sign of a sociopath.
I know what you mean Eve about mental illness getting the rap again, and making those with it seem dangerous....fearing public more. Aside from suicide from terminal illness, only depressed people kill themselves, which in the end he did. There are signs of mental illness, but he was just pure evil...and that is not part of mental illness. Playing those machines is a way to disconnect from people as well, a particular type of isolation.

I am just sickened by all of this.

Brat, I beg to differ you completely, people who are completely evil, are sociopaths or psycopaths. By definition, if you are a sociopath or psycopath, you have a serious mental illness. By definition! You couldn't be more wrong! I, as a Messianic Jew, and follower of Jeshua, and Judaism, would also say that people exhibiting pure evil are possessed of the Devil. They may have to undergo an exorcism to be rid of that possession.. :devilish:

By writing this horror off as "he was pure evil"? No. He had a partner, a family. He was living in the community, among people.

'Pure evil' is a myth. The reality is that the person capable of doing this, committing this atrocity, was very human. He was accepted by the people around him. He came into this world as a tiny baby, loved by his mother, went to school, grew up, got a job...

That's impossibly frightening. But that's the reality. This is what humans are capable of. When they are very ill, or very deranged, or whatever messed up thing it is that motivates them. This is what humans are capable of. We do a disservice to our own safety, and taking responsibility for what has happened, by simply assigning this to the 'pure evil' basket.

Psychopathy is something truly terrifying, because it is human. Humans doing this to each other.

It is devastating. Thoughts are with those suffering.

My question is why did he buy so many rifles instead of more high capacity magazines? It almost seems like a plot to further the anti gun agenda. No way he needed or even managed to use all those rifles in that room... strange times we live in. Also why didn't that set an alarm when a man buys over 10 rifles in one year? Or whatever the time frame. There is no need for more than one semi automatic rifle. Anything else is excess.

With all due respect Ragdoll, Evil is not a myth. Evil is real. It is Evil to fire a machinegun into a crowd of innocent people, killing as many as you can. Please don't try to cover it, minimize it or rationalize it. It is what it is. It was Pure Evil, period. Nothing anyone can ever say, will ever change that. :(
