News Do dreams really have meaning?

I don’t think it’s so black and white.

I’ve had premonition dreams where there is no denying what happened.

I had recurring dreams that went away when something happened in my life, right in line with what the dream journals say.

So to b/w say they have no meaning? I disagree.

110% what Eve says. I know without a doubt I have had precognitive dreams. I have near perfect dream recall memory. I can often recall dreams better than I can actual memories. I spend a lot of time analyzing my dreams and while certain symbols may not match up with what dream dictionaries say they mean, I know what they represent for me.

Dreams absolutely have meaning.

I believe they have meaning. My therapist and I have been working on my nightmares. He always tells me that they are symbolic and unresolved issues from the traumas.

My dreams, which are usually nightmares, have clear relevance to my life and traumas. There is very little symbolism in them. They tend to be fairly literal to my experiences.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this is one of those dumb scientific studies by scientists/researchers trying to make a name for themselves. (Happens all the time. And yes, one “study” can “prove” something.....but that doesn’t necessarily make it true!)

I mean c’mon, nightmares are a symptom of ptsd.....so if dreams mean nothing, then ultimately you’d have to redo the DSM and throw out the nightmare symptom.

*laughs*

Not happening.

Thoughts?

Do dreams really have meaning? I don't know what to think.

It really depends. For the most part the dream stage of sleep is where your brain consolidates memory in the brain, so you can retain data in the future. So usually your dreams are an abstract interpretation of either a memory or a concern about the near or distant future

I do think that dreams have meaning usually. Not that the meanings are a huge deal.

Also, here's a weird thing I've learned. The "normal" sleep stages where REM (dream) sleep comes on after a couple hours, doesn't work on everyone. Since I've had PTSD and eventually insomnia, I start having a nightmare within mere minutes of falling asleep if I don't take a clonidine. I asked my psych about this, because I was shocked given what I always thought I knew about sleep stages, and he said that happens with insomnia.

When do nightmares usually happen?

Mine are always before I wake up. Well, right before I’m supposed to wake up.

I guess I’m lucky in that they don’t interrupt my sleep all night long.
