Hi all

How many of you suffer a lump in the throat sensation, or globus as i think its officially called? Ive had this problem for the last 4 years, with little respite! Been to docs about it, had scopes etc and told its just anxiety. Feels so intrusive, a constant feeling like theres something that needs to be cleared from my throat, yet it never does clear. Just wondered if theres anyone else with this problem and how you deal with it?

Many thanks

Hi James, yes have had globus periodically over the years. It seems like I am prone to anything voice or throat related. Maybe something to do with the cognitive dissonance created around speaking. Not my forte. I guess I dealt with it by trying to ignore it as much as possible and work on calming over stimulation.

I do have a few physiological factors such as gerd, hiatus hernia etc but I'm assuming they have dealt with anything like that. Are you able to accept there isnt anything physically wrong? That should help a bit. Does eating something help you?

Have you tried singing lessons? Or elocution? Beat boxing?

Unconcious responses tend to lessen when there is a series of conscious responses you can replace them with. Learning to use your larynx & pharynx in conscious ways (singing, speaking, noise replicating) might help you out.

I get this quite a bit not as bad as I used to be. Now I’m a bit better at dealing with anxiety and learned some coping techniques it’s definitely better than it was.
That’s interesting what Friday said, I sing in a choir twice a week I wonder if that’s another reason it’s not as bad anymore.

For me it feels like a lump in my throat and I can’t swallow, my throat feels very dry. I’m basically never without a cup of tea or a bottle of water in my hand. I’m only right this second thinking that’s maybe not the best coping technique but I just hate that feeling and have to swallow something. Upside I’m incredibly well hydrated.

Wow Friday. How may this work w regular panic attacks or phobias?

I know it is pretty common but you have had it a while. Have you don't some trauma work to release?

It’s the foundation behind the breathing, thing... taking an autonomic (unconscious) response and replacing it with a somatic (conscious) response.

You can use the principle a thousand different ways.

Got the shakes? Get moving. Gross motor or fine motor, or a combo. Dancing, running, stretching, drawing, pretty much anything.

Flinching? Cowering? Hunching? Stand up straight. Chin up. Shoulders back. Gut in. Stride out. Tits up. Add a little purposeful wiggle to your walk. Some Shazaaam. Or try dancing.

Want to scream? Stuttering or repeating the same word(s) over and over? Feel all choked up? Again, try singing. Or voice exercises. (A reverse of this, if you can’t talk, is to drink something. Out of a straw, ideally. Talking is purposeful, drinking and sucking instinctive. Use one system to elbow the other out of the way.)

Hypervig - visually? Deliberately using your observation skills
Hypervig - auditorilly? Listening and indentifying things by sound.

Etc.

It all sounds really simple, because it is.

You look at how your body is responding to something, and then you meet it / counter it... with something you’ve decided to do on purpose.

Does jack to counter what’s causing the reaction, but short circuiting the reaction itself tends to make life a lot more livable. The more livable life is, and the more tools we have to meet reactions? The easier it is to come at the cause. IMO.

THANK YOU! seems increasing mindfulness and our consciousness takes us into a dffrnt zone. I do find this spirtual in a way. Thanks

Yes, It is a horrible feeling like someone is choking me or that I have 2/3 pills stuck in my throat. For me each episode lasted for 2 weeks before it goes away around 5/6 times over the last 30 years. The only thing that gave any relieve during the episode was when I burped or when I was eating. Globus Pharyngeus or Globus Sensation.
