Sufferer Recently diagnosed - childhood trauma

Hey everyone, I received a diagnosis of PTSD this last Friday from my psychiatrist of about 8 years. I have recently started having memories of my disturbing childhood and many things I had to go through. I have already started therapy to work through the traumas I have experienced. I didn't think much about the diagnosis initially because I feel like I have already been taking measures to work through the traumas before the diagnosis and didn't feel that there was anything else that needed to be done. Last night (Christmas Eve) things started to really become real and I realized to a greater extent what I had to endure at the age of 7 and before. I have found comfort in poetry and attending open mics in my area but my hope in joining this forum is to find others who struggle with PTSD who

Are there any rules for posting? I have a lot going through my mind about traumatizing situations but I definitely don't want to trigger anyone as I try to get things off my chest.

We don't do trigger warnings here, as a general rule :)

Take a look at the bottom of the webpage where you'll find our Community Constitution, and other useful info that's particularly helpful for new members.

Also there, you'll find the 'Contact Us' link that you can use to ask any questions you have about the forums, the mods will be happy to help through that link :)

Hi @Many_crows_dancing ,
Welcome to the forum. I am glad that you found us. I am sure you will find a lot of the advice and suggestions on here helpful. Then there will be some that are not - ignore those! We all have different ideas on what helps and what doesn't just as our symptoms and experiences can be quite different.

It is also worth remembering that this forum crosses international borders, and we have in the past had happy confusions due to cultural misunderstandings!

You might find it helpful to start a diary on here - that is a neat way to write what you want, and personally I like to plot my progress through it. Others prefer to write separate threads every time an issue arises. Whatever works best for you. There is no right or wrong way to use this forum.

welcome to the forums. I have watched some open mic poetry in the past. I wish I had something like that near me. Just curious if you read your poetry or just listen?

I do both, I enjoy hearing others read their poetry because it can offer other perspectives but also because I can find things that I can relate to. I attend three open mics regularly throughout the week. I also read my poetry. I had someone record my poem as I read it at a big open mic in my area and it ended up being the last poem of the season and I finished the year out strong. Would anyone like to see the video? Also is there any way I could share the video on here or through private message? I call the poem gold and silver which is a comparison/contrast.
