News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I just met with my therapist and asked if there are any new plans due to Corona Virus. She said they have been discussing doing tele-therapy if needed and how to make it work for everyone. Apparently, insurance companies don’t normally approve that, but it’s being approved during this crisis. I don’t use insurance, but they will do the same for all people, regardless. I’m glad that I and most of my parts trust her now and may even possibly have a secure attachment. This Corona crisis is helping me realize that. If it had been a year ago, this possible therapy separation alone would have me in a major panic right now.

I went out for my monthly shopping today and while they were out of things like sanitizing gel and lysol wipes, everything else was in stock. I think everyone is downplaying the importance of this virus in America. We're Muracans, we don't get Covid 19!! Whatever. I think we should be prepared for not having stocked shelves because we can't get the products. Especially those from China, from which we import almost everything. I may or may not get sick. I don't leave home much so the "odds are ever in my favor", but I sell eggs to folks who do go out. I hope I can continue selling, they are getting a safer product and I am getting money for my chicken habit.

I have a runny nose and a cough, so hmm. I guess I'll send my doc a note because my blood sugars are up too. There is one case in my county, 167 in my state with 23 deaths, I think. I am one of those people it could kill, but no fever so I'm thinking I'm fine, just a PTSD thang.

Hoping that you are fine @DharmaGirl. Sending healing well wishes and vibes your way.

I know we still know relatively little about the new Coronavirus, but one thing I see surprisingly little being mentioned is this:

https://www.eturbonews.com/542533/coronavirus-risk-for-asians-africans-caucasians-revealed/ said:
East Asians, Japanese, and Han Chinese are the most likely people to become severely sick by the coronavirus with a chance of more than 90% when exposed. Europeans only rank in the 50%, Africans in the 60% range, and considered low to medium. It also makes a difference if one is a smoker or non-smoker.

Here's the original publication: Single-cell RNA expression profiling of ACE2, the putative receptor of Wuhan 2019-nCov

Also on the same topic, and while a little more cautious in their conclusions (particularly because of limited sample sizes), voicing similar suggestions:

Recent reports of the ACE2 expression analysis in lung tissues from Asian and Caucasian populations are still controversial. The single-cell RNA-seq analysis reported that the Asian donor had much higher ACE2 expression cell ratio than white and African-American donors6. In contrast, the ACE2 expression analysis using the RNA-seq and microarray datasets from control lung tissues indicated there were no significant differences between Asian and Caucasian, or male and female11. The ACE2-expressing cells are a very small part of cells in lung tissues6. The sample size and the purity of ACE2-positive cells in the selected samples would influence the conclusions. Our analysis showed the differences in distribution and AFs of eQTLs for ACE2 in different populations, indicating the diversity of ACE2 expression pattern in populations (Supplementary Table S3). Large-scale and multiple tissue-level analysis of single-cell RNA-seq would be more accurate for the expression analysis of ACE2 in different populations. In addition, our data showed the moderate difference in AFs of eQTLs between South Asian and EAS, which suggests the potential difference of ACE2 expression in different populations and ethnics in Asia (Fig. 1c).

In summary, we systematically analyzed coding-region variants in ACE2and the eQTL variants, which may affect the expression of ACE2 using the GTEx database to compare the genomic characteristics of ACE2among different populations. Our findings indicated that no direct evidence was identified genetically supporting the existence of coronavirus S-protein binding-resistant ACE2 mutants in different populations (Fig. 1a). The data of variant distribution and AFs may contribute to the further investigations of ACE2, including its roles in acute lung injury and lung function12. The East Asian populations have much higher AFs in the eQTL variants associated with higher ACE2 expression in tissues (Fig. 1c), which may suggest different susceptibility or response to 2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2 from different populations under the similar conditions.

I've really had it with all the media hysteria. Those kind of information would certainly help curb all this panic somewhat. Instead we're literally getting livetickers on every new case. What the f?

Amazing how the stock market is so turbulent. Of course it's ok @osiris.

Analysts are saying that the combination of the disagreement between Russia, Saudi Arabia and the US over oil prices & also the virus will cause a lot of companies to go to the wall. Hmm I thought cheaper oil flooding onto the market would be good. But idk..

Our government is talking recession, stimulus packages & telling everyone to stay calm. They've been talking to big employers asking them to hang onto their employees rather than tip them out of paid employment. Fair enough too.

Qantas is cutting 1/4 of their capacity for o/s travel and the CEO has said he'll not take a salary till the end of the financial year. That's big of him. He could maybe not take a paid salary for the rest of his life and he'd still so ok. But it's the symbolic thing to do I suppose.

Our stock market crashed yesterday and earlier today, following the US and then rebounded up just over 3%. So, good market for bargain hunters? Anyone got some spare cash? lol I hear t/p stocks are still climbing.

Now the State governments are telling us that the spread of this virus is 'inevitable' and they're preparing to close schools and go the way Italy is. So in talks to have spectatorless sport etc.

And oh no Mily Cyrus has cancelled her tour?

It also makes a difference if one is a smoker or non-smoker.

^^Well that's just plain silly. As if one should have to mention that ever. :banghead:

^^Because just about everything is better or makes a difference if one is a non-smoker.

*Though in hindsight being able to smoke out some of my anxiety over other stuff would be cool.

I'm reading a book at the moment where the protagonist smokes and I've been daydreaming about lighting up! lol

I've got a sore throat and a runny nose? What does that even mean now??
