I feel our citizens are doing more than our government is. We are definitely more hands on and capable. I know they are stretched to the limit so If we "need spacers for the centerlink" (whatever that is) someone steps up and does it. I'm not relying on my government to make safe decisions for me and mine.

I'm not going to dwell on past mistakes, that changes nothing.

A word from your Admin:
Totally disagree but totally willing to agree to disagree.
Then I'd ask that you let this drop for now. You've made your position on the Australian PM very clear, with links.

ALL: It is alright to agree to disagree.

ON VENTING: It's also alright to vent - but remember that this is a discussion thread. Be prepared for challenge and discussion - and be ready to agree to disagree and let the conversation move on.

ADVICE: If this thread becomes too stressful an environment, then take a break. Or take your vent to your diary, and let readers know that you just want some space to vent and that you don't seek comment...you've got many options.

It's only been two weeks and 5 days since he stopped saying he was going to the footy.
I can't help thinking that it's maybe time to let this one go...?

You've been citing it as an example of his incompetence on a regular basis for the last fortnight. And, we get it. He's probably screwed a few things up.

But in all your reading, and all the medico friends you've been consulting, how many of them have had to run a country through a pandemic like this before? Not one. This is a new experience for all of us.

If you want to find fault? You'll find it. No question. But our current numbers of infected, our current number of deaths - those trajectories aren't anything like many places in the world right now.

It's emotionally exhausting to be angry about the same thing day in, day out. And completely unhelpful. So...maybe let the football thing go.

ETA Sorry @joeylittle , cross-posted.

I have done two months worth of reading, video watching, scientific paper reading and so forth. I am not a medical person

^You need to regulate your reading.

^ You are not an authority on the pandemic miss spock and reading for months will not make you one. Much of what you say is regurgitated crap from unspecified sources and unfortunately if you believie everything you read, it's confirming you own bias. Some critical analysis would go a long way imo. And it's making you upset. Spreading your version onwards is doing nobody any favours either.

Murphy kept agreeing with Morrison like he was lackey of Putin or Kim Jong-un or Saddam Hussien/

^That's an insulting and ridiculous comment! He may not be a world authority & he's not claiming to be. But he's got a tough job and he seems to have the people of this country (Australia) at heart and he's loyal to us and our prime minister.

^You find fault with everything and everyone.

He is going to cause a generation of Australians a terrible lot of pain

^No the pandemic, specifically covid19 is. "He" is trying to limit the extent that it does. Stop blaming people who are trying to help us. They may not be perfect and they make mistakes. They are human.

This virus is quite sophisticated in it's capacity to begin it's infectious stage in a host without overtly alerting the host to its presence. I cannot imagine what pressure in the evolutionary sequence that must have occurred to make it evolve as it has. I suppose somebody will track it backwards and discover how that may have happened.

Taiwan spent 16 years preparing for this so yeah their schools can stay open but no kid would ever take their mask off or touch anything unless they had a wiper to wipe it down.

^Taiwan did not spend any time prepping for this particular virus. Nobody knew this was coming until it did. Even though there were various people that issued warnings that we were due for a pandemic.

Taiwan learned from it's experience with SARS and MERS and had various plans sitting in situ. As soon as they knew covid19 had jumped into the wild they enacted their plans.

^^Children and adults in Taiwan DO NOT HAVE TO WEAR MASKS. They can if they want to but it is not mandatory, not law & not standard practice.

The wearing of masks is a contentious issue because of everything @Chris-duck has already commented on. It's best to leave the masks for those on the front line.

You say you are walking around your house in PPE suits or similar, disinfecting your own home, the same place that nobody but you & partner have been in. Why? The virus cannot walk. Who is touching your doors and gates when they too should be at home? Why would you bother disinfecting them?

You say you have enough food and supplies to last 12 months or longer? Then you say you're wiping & disinfecting your shopping? Were you one of those people who were stockpiling because if you were then you are the reason ordinary people cannot get reasonable supplies to sustain themselves.

Visitors & tourists have been asked to go back to their own countries while we try to grapple with this virus.

Backpackers & seasonal workers all must undergo the mandatory fourteen day quarantine before moving from one region to another.

Borders have closed to all but permit holders.

Schools & childcare centres remain open here and are safe to attend. There is nothing bad about that. Some people need their children to go to school because they are first responders and have NOBODY at home to educate or care for their children. The PM has made it plain that is the main reason he's keeping schools and childcare centres open for now.

I have relatives and nephews, nieces that work or attend private schools. They have the resources to go online. They have the money to rapidly change to online.

Public -run of the mill- schools do not necessarily have those resources nor do some families. Keeping schools and childcare open helps to keep people working and learning. That's not bad imo.

^^Schools have soap! There is no shortage of soap!

This is an ever changing dynamic environment. Consider yourself so lucky miss spock that you can do all of those things that you've repeated several times in this thread, to keep yourself safe. Some people are not so fortunate but it's not the governments fault. Catering for everyone's needs in such a specific event like this is completely new. For all of us.

@LuckiLee - there is no need to have 'spacers' (actually there is no such thing for humans??) at centrelink lines. Well I suppose you could have somebody going along the line and telling people to stand six feet apart? But really??

The people who lined up outside of centrelink did not adhere to the social distancing guidelines that were advertised constantly.

They were also told that if they had a tax file number, medicare number or any other government link they could use the online portals to register. Once the portal's capacity was expanded, because it did crash at one point, those lines of people substantially diminished. I've not heard of a cluster of infections that have been attributed directly to lining up at centrelink. Not like the cruise ship passengers at least.

We all live and learn as this proceeds. Stay safe everyone.

I did a kind of informal poll on Facebook about who is wearing masks and was surprised (although I'm not sure why) to find that everyone is. I am thinking I need to start (at least when going out where I'll be in touch with people).

Guess I need to start.

Now in the US, people are talking of a depression and war.
This is a scary angle to look at. Because there's other elements that have been playing out since before the well-publicised tariff stand-off between US and China late past year, with a simultaneous ongoing diplomatic issues that's been playing out with US and China expelling each others journalists (which only just predated Covid taking over the news completely).

Hopefully, for everyone's sake, both sides can keep a reasonably level head. The virus is hurting everyone more than enough already.
