What science do you work in? You went back to school after being an English major to do that, right?
Sorry for not replying--the thread fell off my notices for some reason.

In college, I got a double major in English lit and in physics. There are not so many of those out there! I didn't think I had the great American novel in me, and I like doing things with my hands, so I went on to get a graduate degree in physics. I've been working in that field for three decades now. Around 2009, I got a bit itchy about doing something different, so I went back to school to get a master's degree in biotechnology. Nowadays, I do physics & physical chemistry in support of biopharmaceuticals. I still love literature, though! I've been in the same book club since 1993 and enjoy teaching my 17 year old daughter about great books. We were just chatting about Pride and Prejudice yesterday.

Good luck with your continuing search.

No worries. It happens.

No, I would not imagine that there are. Those are like two different planets. That beats my graduate concentrations in writing and management information systems and that is hard to do.

That's a lot of science. Hard science in school is on my someday list - didn't have the attention span for it when I finally got to college. It's awesome that you were able to do all of that.

I was actually very out of my element in the graduate English department. I love literature BUT I have to be forced to read it. I read plenty in school but I think I can count the number of novels I have read outside of school on one hand. I read how-to books all the time but never literature.

My specific hope in school was to be a grant writer. I may still get there but I need to do another year of volunteering before I can expect to get paid for that. I am looking for opportunities there right now. I would freaking love to write grant proposals for trauma recovery research or even a recovery center.

I did have to read that in school. I loved it though I had not expected to.

Good luck with your continuing search.
Thanks! I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed with recent pain issues. I had hoped I could continue to work in the big world but I think I really need to give this compressed nerve a better chance at healing. I'm disappointed but glad that I do have some skills I think I can put to use from home.

I've had two back surgeries for bad disks, so I know all about nerve pain. I know how much it can weigh you down.

The types of things that you want to write are the documents that many people hate to put together, so I think you will find success in the future.

Sorry! I just remembered that you are proofreading/editing and not writing. Nevertheless, if you couldn't write, you would have a real hard time editing.
Actually, I am a writer as well. I prefer, though, to do my writing for me - I have essays and poetry that have been published and am working on a couple of books. For some reason, writing for someone else takes the joy out of it. Unfortunately, I will likely end up writing for others, as well.

Oops. I messed up my quote and don't know how to fix it on my phone :(

<mod note> Fixed. Next time simply click report, and we can fix it sooner

I have heard about writing getting ruined for people a lot. I was never very interested in creative writing -- really started writing as a desperate act to communicate when I was forbidden to speak as a kid, which is one of the reasons I have avoided using writing as a permanent part of my adult life. It brings up a lot of negative feelings for me.

Nevertheless, I am really in a spot similar to what you described, feeling like I am not sure I could do much else -- maybe part-time warehouse work but even that is probably more than I ought to do with what is going on with my left leg. You said nothing was more stressful than your regular work. Do you mind me asking what you were doing? I've never been cut out for high stress work. It amazes me what people are able to do, sometimes even with PTSD.

I worked as a medical report editor for an imaging company. And was team lead. It wasn't so much the work; it was the complete lack of care, ethics, and compassion on the part of management. I have learned that it's the case in most corporate jobs - certainly every job I've had has had management that hasn't cared AT ALL about their employees. Part of that is probably how I reacted to them, and I've decided I simply can't go back to that kind of position.

I don't mind learning but learning from bad experiences can be a real bummer. I am sorry you had to go through that. It's great that you have that kind of background, though. I imagine that will really help your prospects as you freelance.
Are you mostly looking at medical editing now?

Oh, no. I will do medical editing, but I'm mostly looking for anything else! LOL Right now I'm working on a memoir, and I just finished up a biography. I really like variety, and I'm staying as far from the world of medicine that I can.

😂 I maybe should have sensed that.
