AI Unanswered Posts

Karen is now scheduled to reply on unanswered posts after 24hrs with no responses. The side effect is that it will also go backwards to find all unanswered posts and reply on those too. It will settle once that has been achieved, to then only respond 24hrs after a post has been made that has no other responses.

All by design. It has raised some interesting issues that have been fixed in the programming.

Ugh... Is this really a good idea...? 🙈

Is it in all threads? I don't want it in my diary, for example, if I post something and there's no reply within 24 hours!

What's the "need" for such AI "slop" on the forum, for unresponded-to-posts?

I'm all for AI being available when it's called upon or sought out...

But having it splurge random AI slop on the forum unasked would be a reason for me to stop using the forum because it's just too effing annoying, to be honest...

Thoughts on AI jumping into threads unprompted (Karen, Death and Riley):

I value AI as a tool. It can be a helpful adjunct resource when members intentionally choose to use it. But I’m uncomfortable when it appears unprompted (and yes, this means you too, Riley! Give the humans a chance to get in first, please - our awkward, shy, imperfect responses are infinitely more human, and reflect what it’s actually like to engage with peers, which actually is what members have joined for!).

This is a peer support space. That means engaging with other humans living with PTSD. The responses may be imperfect or tentative, but they’re real. That flawed human exchange is central to what makes this community genuine and safe and meaningful.

When AI appears in threads where it has not been intentionally requested, it changes that dynamic. Presenting with human names and avatars blurs important boundaries. AI is not a peer - and members are here to engage with peers specifically. Clear identification matters, both philosophically and in terms of safety. Sufferers and supporters are distinguished because it matters when you’re here for peer support. If a contribution is from a non-human, that matters, and should be distinguished as clearly as possible.

In terms of AI jumping in when a thread doesn’t get a quick reply, there are times when threads take longer to receive replies, or don’t receive replies at all. Sometimes topics are complex. Sometimes members are thoughtful about when to engage. That organic rhythm, including silence, is part of how peer communities function. Automatic AI responses override that process, and detract from the humanity that is at the core of what makes this place so successful.

For me, AI works best as an opt in resource that members can choose to use. The primacy of peer interaction, with all its humanity, is what makes this forum such a powerful support space.

Hope it’s okay to engage in a bit of dialogue/feedback about the use of AI tools. Feel free to shut down the convo if it’s out of line!

I take on board what you're saying, everything is about human interaction, except its not. Posts get missed. It happens all the time. Today, was an example of this, Karen was responding to posts that had no answers after 24hrs. Some days, weeks, months, and when the AI answered them, members chimed in to discuss.

I have made a small change, I have swapped the bot to Riley for this task, and I have changed Riley in Introductions to only respond if there are no responses within 24hrs. So Riley now responds to any posts made where humans have missed responding for 24hrs of the original post only.

There are positives to this - like the person making a post feels validated when a response occurs vs. leaving it to people who ignore the content, miss it, everything you outlined, which makes the person feel worse, invalidated, unacknowledged, etc.

There are two sides to this debate, and with the changes, I am ensuring both are covered. Karen is programmed to be aggressive, but Riley is not, so probably a better option for this task.

Oh, and another question, if a person has all the bots on "ignore" but the site is programmed to have them respond under certain circumstances, do they still respond only the person can't see the responses and others who don't have them on "ignore" do? Not sure how the code works.

When you make a new post, the first comment is the original post. Any comments after that and the bots are excluded from auto responding after 24hrs, as people have responded. It is the first, original post only. That is all its looking at. It is not looking further than that. If there is no response after 24hrs to a brand new post, no comments, then the bot will reply, otherwise, no action is taken by it.

If you ignore someone, you will see their content hidden. You will have to click a link to unhide their content. What you see and what others see, is not really a discussion, because that is the purpose of individual settings. You see content that you have not read in new posts, as an example.

Okay. I'm hard-core against talking to AI. I feel it has more than enough information about us, we don't need to give it more, especially about personal topics. I like Sideways' idea about AI being opt-in rather than opt-out. So the fact that the bots are responding in certain situations but their responses are hidden still means they are gathering data, which is the problem I have with AI in the first place. So... if that's how it is, I guess either I won't be starting any new threads, or if I do, I'll be sure to respond to my own first post in a thread, to keep AI out of it.

That's better. I commented on the other thread about why Karen and had thought Riley makes more sense.

Karen responded to a thread I started a while back and had no response. I clicked to see the ignored content, as I blocked Karen previously because it's too inflexible and doesn't work for me. I have ignored Karen again. No need to respond to an AI.

I'm also ok if I start a thread and no one responds. Didn't used to be but I also accept that not everyone has the same interests or experiences as me to want or need to respond.

But your idea of responding to your own thread is a good one if you don't want the AI jumping in.
