This forum is unfamiliar to me and I haven't spent time examining its purpose. That's my disclaimer. But I am intrigued by what this particular member of the forum posted regarding the role of Lactic Acid in the bodies of those with PTSD.

I would like to find cross-references to see if this is a valid and research-based theory. The reason I am even interested is the Magnesium really works for me. Also, while I love caffeine in the morning at least, I am getting very shaky from it when I then have work. In reading this post, I see that caffeine is listed as maintaining lactic acid buildup in the brain and suppressing normal neurotransmitter actions that lead to normal feelings and thinking.

Thus, I have decided in addition to taking Magnesium, I will now add a gradual reduction in caffeine also and see how I do with that.

If anyone has tried some of the recommendations listed on the address above, please reply with your before and after experiences. If you take Rx meds or street drugs, I'm not interested as much since that will complicate any other findings. But any before and after is valid and welcome.

I have just looked through Google scholar, and no such research backs this theory. There is research, at a glance, showing lactic acid build-up in patients admitted to children's intensive care, and then the discussion of parents getting PTSD from that, but nothing concrete or actual analytical on lactic acid being part of PTSD. What this person has taken, is one aspect of PTSD, turned it into a lactic acid build-up, then told you that you should take magnesium to fix PTSD.

Seriously... if you read the article he quoted, firstly it was an animal study, then it is based theoretical, unproven, unestablished information on what the brain may do, not what the brain does. Whilst some of what is said is quite accurate for neuroscience, ie. what they can already image and detect under testing, some of it is total nonsense and trying to make a name for themselves. You cannot relate stress or anxiety to PTSD, as different things occur within the brain between stress, anxiety, panic attack, depression, etc, then all together for PTSD.

I agree, the post lacked a coherant thread of evidence. I will have to do some digging also to see what, if any, research backs the theory. I suspect it is a hypothesis that is still being tested and lacks the status of theory yet.

I have added magnesium at bedtime, and I am now caffeine free. Never thought that would happen..anyway, it helps, it all helps. Expect meds, they don't work to well for me. So I am constantly seeking out alternatives to the standard methods, and this combination has helped to shut down a little easier at bedtime. Well, tonight is not a good example it's 230 in the freaking a.m. again and I haven't even had supper yet. It works for me, but we are all our own very little test tubes of life and meds in this PTSD world. It's all quite a learning experience.

I am cutting down on caffeine during the day, but I am still dependent on one cafe latte first thing in the morning. I am woken frequently by a 19 month old, so it helps me to get going. I hope to improve that as she grows and sleeps better. I could try using decaf or 1/2 caf but not yet.

If I forget one dose of Magnesium, I suffer from abdominal pain within hours, so I know it's working when I do take it. I am now able to maintain my weight and tolerate richer foods than before, but in moderation.

I also do not tolerate any medications well, including birth control (practically had blackouts) and SSRI's. When a natural or nutritional element can help, I will try that first (and it's cheaper).

Have you noticed any side effects with Magnesium or any physical improvements yet? For difficulty falling asleep, which for me is rare when I work full time, (but common when I am not working) there are some herbal remedies. Have you tried any? I prefer essential oils for sleep over herbal capsules.

My mom-in-law made me a blend of lavender and geranium. Lavender is a soothing stress-reliever. Geranium is a mood lifter and always makes me have pleasant dreams compared to when I don't use it.

I like to put a couple drops in a nice bath, bathe in it, and then add a few drops directly to the pillowcase. It smells really nice, and it fades in a day or two with no staining or odor. You can make dryer sheets with your own blend, but I haven't tried that and would think it would fade before you get on the pillow that night. But it would diffuse the oils into all your clothes, if you want that.

I'd like to get certified in aromatherapy but it's pretty expensive for me to start it right now; maybe later.

I feel like I need a little to kick sleepiness/depression in the morning. But too much, and I get vigilant and paranoid. I also sometimes shake if there is any stress. That's why I think cutting down might help.

I had to kick the coffee/tea to help with hot flashes and no sleep issue. Took a long time to get over no caffeine. The Magnesium helps with several issues, but sleep is one of them. Trying to find a balance in all this is exhausting, and so am I. Can't spell. Time for sleep, yeah...work tomorrw. uggg
