In your experience, what has helped most?

For me it's:

Therapy - with the RIGHT therapist
Eating really healthily and regularly
Supplements - especially magnesium, inositol, fish oil, Gotu Kola
Giving up coffee
Giving up out-of-control toxic people as friends or boyfriends
Cutting right down on alcohol
Having a gentle, self-caring routine
Avoiding drama and the people who bring drama

Therapy - again with the right therapist
Medication - still hate taking it but hope to come off it next year
Healthy eating
Learning to love & look after my soul - so important, before therapy I didn't know I had one!
Taking life the way it suits me, not feeling i must please other people
Accepting that I cannot change the past just live for the now & future

As previously stated:

Therapy - with the RIGHT therapist
Eating really healthily and regularly
Giving up toxic people/drama (this includes FAMILY)
Aiming for a gentle, self-care routine
Taking life the way it suits me, not feeling I must please other people

Additionally:
  • Learning about, and trying to keep, healthy boundaries
  • Using constructive distraction (e.g., watching comedies and documentaries on Netflix instant) when being obsessive about something (using distraction can help prevent a major downward spiral)
  • Social interaction (forcing self to go out and mingle with other humans in an amicable manner)
  • Higher education (university) to sharpen critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Creating a safe room (a relaxation room, such as a bedroom, filled with tons of comforting pillows/blankets/etc. and a humidifier/mister and other items for relaxation) to visit when alone and distressed

The right TYPE of therapy.
~Neurotherapy/Neurofeedback/EEG Biofeedback
~Intensive Trauma Therapy

Eating well (gotta work on this one, kinda fell off the wagon!)

Taking supplements & vitamins

Spiritual connections

Kicking meds to the curb (with the support of multiple therapists who aren't med happy)

The turning point was deciding to try to live in the land of willingness...to change, to facing my feelings, to being honest about what's in my head with my T.

Still working on all three.

That, and beginning to have compassion for myself.

All else, for me, hinges on willingness.

  • Space and time to Breathe and Relax
  • EMDR and Trauma Therapy
  • Having Something to Look Forward To
  • Yoga with candles
  • Massage
  • Glass of Wine or few :x3:

Making the decision to "fight for my life";the decision to fully dedicate myself to a healing path, has made the biggest difference for me. This has meant going to therapy weekly, taking medications, moving out of my comfort zone to try new behaviors, seeing a team of doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists etc.

I have undergone Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, EMDR, exposure therapy, individual and group therapy etc. Part of 'the work' has been; changing the way I view my experiences, changing the way I view the world, and changing the way I view myself. Identifying, expressing, and releasing my emotions. Letting go of old coping mechanisms like excessive alcohol consumption, physical acting out, and cutting. Sometimes it has meant releasing unhealthy types of people from my life.

Because of the seriousness of addiction and alcoholism, I may have literally saved my own life.
