Book Club Chit Chat Thread

You're thinking the thread has to follow logical flow of the book. That is not so. Just like threads now, they divert and take different courses as discussion grows.

A person may read The Tiger's Wife in June, then add their comments to that thread. Others who have read the book, may then come back and re-participate within it from their memories and insights.

You may get two or three people who add into an older thread, that they are now going to read it at their own defined pace and discuss it all over again.

Think of it like a never ending discussion... as that is what each thread will become. You may have people revert back to earlier content due to understanding something in better depth from a later part of the book.

Threads have no real course or direction, other than when they first open for the initial reading of the book. After that, they take a life of their own, people participate as and when they see fit.

It is psychologically impossible to try and cater every mental route to please everyone based on individual thoughts and behaviours.

You may get some people who comment after each chapter, you may get someone who doesn't provide their comment until they have finished the book and the discussion is at the end.. without reading any prior discussion, as it is simply them uniquely providing their interpretation of the book.

That is the whole beauty of this... its uncomplicated as possible, not meant to create any stress for anyone, as complete freedom is with every single person on how they read, when they read, and what insight they provide or choose to respond to.

Running forums has taught me a whole lot about rules and structure, where they're needed, when they are not helpful, etc.

IMHO, a book club with the least guidelines possible seems the best method at this point. We haven't run a book club here before, so the book club as it grows will really define how further book clubs are shaped. If something doesn't work for the majority, then we change it and adapt. If it does, we leave it alone or improve it, if it can be improved.

Basically, we start very very simple, and the first few books will refine and define how further books are done. There is nothing saying the current discussion method for the first book is right. It could cause more issue than good... but we have a starting point on which we will refine upon collectively.

If better methods are majority discussed, any member of the book club can poll something in here to help refine the club. The club is a collective... but we have to start somewhere before we can learn from experience. We won't get it right from the start... guaranteed. We will collectively refine the club though with time.

What kind of rate of speed are we talking about? A few chapters a week? More? Less? I know a lot of people with PTSD have issues with concentration when reading for long stretches. That may be something to take into consideration.

I got all excited yesterday when I got an email from Amazon saying I would be getting my books earlier, around mid Feb now... whilst my other one on Lifespan development is already on its way.

Updated: Just checked email... shipped. That means I will definitely have them in the next two weeks. Whoo hoo!

I'll be able to start that Hunger Games then straight away. Whoo hoo....

LOL, I'll try not to read too far ahead - but it might be tough. I think it's going to be a hard one to put down. You could always suggest a Kindle to Nicolette for a Valentine's Day present.....;)

Not sure about kindle yet... I may give it a shot, may not... as I said, I have the kindle app on my iPad, but I also recognise what others have said about the backlighting being the issue, which Kindle doesn't use.

Still thinking about that one at this point.

Well, you can access the forum here on it too, which is nice. For some reason I can't type a message on it for this site though, even though I can on Facebook. I've got the Fire and love the thing. I've found the books to usually be less expensive than "real" ones, and it's nice to not have to hunt for a book I want, then wait for the darned thing if the bookstore doesn't have it. Best thing since sliced bread. Have you tried the Kindle app yet? I have one on my Droid and like being able to have a book with me wherever I go without having to carry anything extra. It's just a B&W one, but nice to have, nonetheless.

Kindle only has an "experimental browser" upon the later models. They make that very clear under its specifications.

Facebook does not use a WYSIWYG editor interface, which this forum does. This forum will normally revert to a simply text field on mobile devices, tablets, etc... as it covers both. Again though, Kindle is only using an experimental browser right now... which means it may or may not work for you based on website being viewed and technologies employed.

B*gger, damn, awsome books aren't so bloody awsome. They have emailed me to say the Tigers Wife is out of stock. Back to the drawing board.
