Well This Is A New One For Me

Just go research PTSD experts, the majority are males when it comes to trauma.

I agree with the female aspect, and that is why many do want a female therapist, because many are sexually abused or assaulted by a male, thus a female is less scary and distant from the trauma.

In my immediate area, the distribution is pretty even in terms of male and female claiming to be specialists (I did go back to verify this), but when I contact and ask the various people in question, they weren't really PTSD specialists, they' were just saying they treat people with PTSD. They're generalists treating a specialist condition. I don't know if the guy I am going to try next week is part of a majority male population that treats PTSD rather than women, I just know he seems to be appropriate and he happens to be male.

This could be an interesting project to pursue, at least in terms of psychological tendencies in career choice by gender, in general.

It seems to me to be a balance... I find I was less inclined to contact someone who had a long and diverse list of specialties than someone who had a few which included PTSD in particular. Perhaps if I had broadened it to "trauma therapist" it would not have been so difficult.

I would actually agree that that thinking is exactly on the mark. It is no different to a therapist with a long list of credentials. They likely have lots of theory and certificates to show, but are useless in actual hands on counselling vs. someone who has less credentials, but more experience.

Trauma is quite a small field, and it doesn't reach far within diagnoses, to be perfectly honest, so I concur that you are on the mark in essence.
