Hello everybody

My partner and soon to be mother of my first child was sexually and physically abused by her older brother from the age of 6 to 12. Her mother caught him once and that was the end of it but never told her father so he was never punished. And the subject was never brought up again. They never talked about it so she never learned to deal with it.
During puberty she was very self destructive and did drugs, and after almost OD'ing and suffering psychosis she started to read up on what had happened to her and through lots of self help books and the occasonal psychiatrist she eventually got over it. Her brother actually broke down and apologized to her about 10 years after the facts. So far, so good.

Now fast forward to two years ago. I have been good friends with her brother (ignorant of their past obviously) when his sister and I, both around the age of 35, start dating. He freaks out and tells her never to tell me about what happened 30 years ago because it might destroy his career. This of course hurt her very deeply and severely soured their relationship. As a result she started to have flashbacks from her childhood trauma, anxiety attacks, shock, nightmares, fainting, epileptic seizures followed by seeing black figures standing in the room, etc. Now of course the irony is that I put two and two together from witnessing all this and doing research because it was freaking me out, and eventually found out what had happened to her. So the exact thing he tried to avoid, he caused by acting like a d!ck to her. Everytime she tried to get in touch with him he either shut her out or started yelling at her that she should have never told me and that she was jealous of his success which is totally ridiculous. I even tried to call him and set up a meeting to talk it out and he flat out denied that the abuse ever happened. This caused another grave shock in her which was so bad that her doctor sent her to a neurological psychiatrist (might not be the correct word, sorry English is not my first language) because they feared she might have suffered brain damage (!) from her brother's constant abuse.
Now all this is of course greatly enraging me. On top of the pain he's been causing my girlfriend, he's been telling our common friends that she is crazy and a liar and has borderline disorder. So now my friends think I am blind to the facts and being manipulated by her. She has by the way been seeing various doctors and psychiatrists over the years who have all "believed" her story. Quite the manipulator I must say. :)
On top of that she is 7 months pregnant of our child now and the worst thing that can happen to a pregnant woman is stress, so that rules out beating the crap out of him, pardon my french. His behaviour has actually caused two bleedings during the pregnancy, the last one prompting her doctor to send her to ER because the baby had stopped growing. So now he's not only hurting her and me but our baby also. All the while he's still telling her mom that it's not his fault and she's lying and overreacting.

Sorry for ranting. I can go on for hours. I just wish somebody had a similar experience and could tell me how to deal with this because as it stands right now I am waiting for my daughter to be born so I can break every bone in his body. I know it's wrong but I have been holding my rage for over two years now and I am a very big man capable of doing much harm. I wish it had never come to this but he leaves me no choice. Besides if I don't do it, my girlfriend might shoot him.

Hey nicolas,

Welcome to the forum. Read up on the information here about PTSD, and see where you can help your girlfriend. I can say that your causing physical harm to her brother will get you nowhere, except probably prison. And it will eventually lead to the breakdown of your relationship with your girlfriend too. Nobody actually wants to be with a person who can be so premeditatedly violent.

We all have someone or something that we hate for having caused so much suffering to our loved ones, but we have to let it go so that we can concentrate on supporting our sufferers, not causing them even more pain.

Hi nicholas & welcome.

Sorry to read of your partners situation.

You will find plenty of information and support here and read the exeriences of other sufferers, perhaps shedding some light on both of your situations. The Supporter section is a great place to vent.

As SS has pointed out, violence is not the answer, however you might feel. If you did beat him up, who would be there to support you partner and child while you were in prison, to protect them from his attentions?

How would it be for your child growing up with a convicted fellon for a father?

Find a safe way to get that energy out: sports, martial arts, chop wood, climb a mountain and yell at the world - whatever does it for you, but do it!

Your partner needs you to be there for her and your baby, to be there for her on the long road to healing, to be the rock she can rely on and the calm in the storm. She needs you to be the one to keep the gun out of her reach, to take your share of night duties and to hold her when she cries. That is the manly thing to do, the man who will make his woman and child proud of him by supporting them with his strength and fortitude.

See you in the supporters section, ranting is always an option, x

Nicolas,

He's some piece of work (meaning :poop:)! But he's irrelevant here. She's the only important thing (and the baby). There is no way that you can control him. He's going to do what ever he's going to do. You can't just crush him. She may still love him as a brother. Concentrate on helping her and supporting her. Learn what she needs and see that she gets it.

HTH,

Bear

BTW: Welcome to the forum!

That's what all the doctors and psychiatrists have told her, to leave her brother alone and concentrate on herself and her baby. Easier said than done when he's her brother and their mother is still alive. Like for example last christmas we had separate christmas dinners at her mom's place, two days apart. Totally absurd. We all live in the same city and have common friends so that makes it a lot harder to shut him out of our lives. Plus her mom keeps bringing him up, surely with good intentions, but everytime she mentions his name, my girlfriend gets so mad that her stomache twists and on several occasions she has even fainted and had a seizure. So we have to keep telling her mom to not talk about her brother anymore or she can't come by and see the baby. Which is in turn saddening her... it's just a big sh!tstorm which could easily have been avoided if her brother said sorry and that's it. But he seems to be off in his own megalomaniac world, and that's not just our impression but many people who are still our friends have told us the same, unknowing of what's happened between the two of them. He's been acting weird towards everybody. My guess is that he's heading for a mental breakdown of epic proportions by shutting his sister out and keeping his dark secret locked up inside and painting his sister like a total lunatic. Deep inside he knows what he's done and that he's acting very cowardly and shamefully right now.

Oh and believe me, I have lots of outlets. I play in an extreme metal band and practice martial arts 3 times a week. Can't imagine what I would have done without it!

Hi Nicolas and welcome to the forum! Yikes, what an awful situation. This is the best place to vent ever. Also, lots of really important and helpful information is here - read through all the stickies at the tops of thr forums.

More specifically: Everything everyone else said! My only addition is this: with respect to the brother, take the long view - his reputation among the mutual friends is starting to crumble - if you both behave with dignity and politely decline to get sucked into the drama he is creating ("I'm sorry, my brother is dealing with some rather serious things right now, and may not be quite himself, I'd prefer not to talk about him outside the family.") It won't take very long for people to figure out who the crazy one is.

Hi Nicolas, welcome! I can relate to the terrible situation you are in. My partner also suffers from ptsd due to child sexual abuse. She was repeatedly violated by her father from the age of four. When she tried to tell her mother she said "I know, I don't want to talk about it"

We have been together for 11 years now and I have seen her suffer every emotion from wanting to get her father killed, to trying to forgive him, to hating him again, to finally just doing what she can to survive. That goes for her mother also, who was the ultimate betrayer by sending her back to the abuser. I suspect that your partner may also be starting to feel the pain of betrayal from her mother, because quite frankly trying to get her to play "happy families" with the brother is just not on. It belittles the severity of the abuse. What her brother is doing right now is abuse. Her mother is hurting her deeply by even mentioning his name in "polite conversation", it's not on. Tell her to shape up or ship out till she gets a new perspective.

I have had too many run-ins with her family to list. I know that you expressed how difficult it is to shut him out of your life, but the only advice I can give you is to emphatically shut the door on anyone, situation, place or gathering that could be a trigger for her right now. When she is stronger than she can choose to deal with all this, but she must be the one who is in control, because this type of abuse takes away the sufferers power.

I feel for you and the health of your partner and unborn baby.

Hey everyone, I'm back with some venting. The birth of our first child is drawing nearer and with that tensions have risen between us and her brother. The only feedback we've had from him is through her mother who keeps on telling us how he feels even though my girlfriend has told her a hundred times that she doesn't want to hear it because it's too hurtful. He didn't call when he found out his sister was pregnant and when she had an internal bleeding after 3 months caused by stress, he didn't call either because "why should he?", as he told us later. So obviously we don't want him anywhere near the birth.

The reason for my current venting is that he's told their mother - you're not gonna believe this - that he's very sad that we cut him out from the pregnancy process and that it's all her fault because she shouldn't have come to him with her problems (caused by him, remember). And the reason why he lashed out at her like that is because he was angry and she should know not to take that seriously. So he can say whatever he wants, and it was pretty bad e.g. calling her crazy and saying everybody hates her, but anything she says is the reason for this whole feud. And she should apologize for that, forget everything and let them start over with a clean slate. Really, the nerve on this guy is just baffling. I don't know whether to laugh or beat him into a pulp. Not only does he refuse to take any sort of blame on him but he's also turning into a megalomaniac. I can't believe he actually has the balls to claim that HE is sad that we shut him out and SHE should apologize. I am starting to believe that he is certified crazy.
