My T Crushed Me

Thanks, Bloom, you make a lot of sense. I don't understand where you say he couldn't read my mind. I was telling him how I felt, and he just kept repeating that he WATCHED me in the waiting room and I wasn't distressed. I thought he didn't believe my distress so I left. I still don't think he believed me, but he didn't have to read my mind, I told him how I felt, and he was telling me I couldn't feel that way since I was fine in the waiting room. I am not willing to speak with him about it. I am done with him and will get over it. I don't want him to be a rescuer, I just want to be believed. I'm fine now though. I've decided its best not to have feelings I con't control so I will just live as long as I can.

Monster, the mind-reading isn't directed at that appointment's details in particular.

Your posts contain some general references to not showing your emotions....a real problem I have and am working hard to gain skills for. Because if I can't communicate my distress at all levels, I can't get help for it.

That you'd appear fine in an appointment only to go out and OD later is a sign you're not feeling safe enough to disclose in the main place where it would be most helpful to you.

...and that you could be at risk of doing it again.

I didn't think my T. believed me. I did the hard thing and told him that. ...and he promised me that he believed that I believed it. This was after I fired him. ;P

I decided that would be good enough for me. Because if I was lying, I needed help. ...and if I wasn't lying, I still needed help.

He believes me now.

What I wrote is only my opinion based on very little info. If any of it is at all helpful, great! But if not, please feel free to reject it and keep searching for what is true for you.

As a person who dealt with many suicidal people, I can tell you that it is very traumatizing to have someone tell you they're fine only to learn they weren't but apparently didn't trust me enough to tell me. ...and despite my desire to help, made me wary of taking their future words as being accurately representative of what was really going on.

Because it's terrifying and life-altering to lose a patient to suicide. I've lost a few.

Your T. will no doubt move on to other patients with no problem. But will you truly be able to let it end like this? If not, I hope you'll consider trusting yourself to handle one last appointment where you get to say whatever you need to for closure. Because you have a chance to stand up for yourself here, and if you do, it'll get easier to stand up for yourself the next time.

The thing about that is that my T. isn't there to be my rescuer...he's there to teach me that I have all I need within myself to be my OWN hero.

So agree with what Bloom has written. She has come such a long way in her therapy and her relationship with her T. I can see how much she has been healing because of it and because of the hard work she puts in and becoming her own Hero. It is extremely hard but it will be worth it.

That's what is great about this site there are always others who have been through so much and whose experience and guidance is worth its weight it gold.

I get it now Bloom. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. Your info is very helpful to me and I hope to learn a lot from it. I think I'm overwhelmed and I've told my T that I think he pushes me too hard. I'm sure he's fine and will move on, we have established that he will take care of himself and I don't have to worry about him, lol. I also know he can't rescue me, and that would be kind of icky and counter-productive, lol. I will probably go back to therapy at some point, its kind of nice to not think about things.

I just read the sticky on suicide and I'm feeling like that. I recognize the change in behavior after a confrontation. I feel so empty. I don't want to talk to anyone. The hospital doesn't help.

Sounds like you really do need to see a therapist monster1977.

I know it is so hard to push through those boundaries and talk and, having PTSD, there are lots of things that could trigger you with any therapist and how they react or reply to things you say and do. My p does it a lot and sometimes I just have to go home and work through those feelings and try and get the true ones instead of the triggered ones that are set in the past and not now that do not help me in getting better and moving forward.

I don't think any p is going to be a perfect match and it takes a long time to build up the trust with them and get to know them and that is the same for you getting to know them and their idiosyncrancies. It is like any relationship, it takes time and this is a pretty intense, and strange relationship. So there are going to be a lot of feelings and resentment sometimes and frustration that they just don't get where you are coming from and, equally you won't get what they mean and where they are coming from and maybe you think they are stupid or just inconsiderate. They are only human though and they cannot read minds. It is hard work but it is up to us to tell them what is going on in our heads and, sometimes that does not come out right or I find it doesn't, so the p is going by body language and words that just don't go together (I think).

If you think this p is wrong for you find another one and keep trying until you find one. But, maybe he is right, it is just the triggering and emotional flashbacks and fear of talking and being believed that is stopping progress. Only you can judge.

Take the info on the sticky about suicide and take it too him and tell him this is how you are feeling. Or to a new p. But, if you are feeling like that, you need to get help. If it is not with this p it is with someone else, maybe a support line, but, if you are feeling suicidal you need to work through it.

Sorry, triggered, my sister committed suicide, and in my opinion, never got the right help, but she also needed to work at it herself, there were reasons why she just never did, but it ended in her death.

Monster, I second all that Lizio said.

It's possible your T. made a mistake. He's only human, and doing the best he can.

Our mental defensiveness is a minefield for which nobody has a map. We only discover our triggers by running into them. One we identify one though, we can defuse it - with help.

If a person in your life appeared to be calmly holding a texting conversation one moment, then was very agitated and tearful as soon as you both were alone....what might you think?

By your description, both these vastly different outward appearances are two different manifestations of the same type of feelings and distress level. Having been there, I get it. My coping skills would get me through to hide it until I felt safe enough to go to pieces.

But it's also fair to say this can be bewildering to others. Some take this behavior as manipulation, or worse, that it's a sign they are hurting us worse somehow (this misinterpretation by loved ones wears out our supporters so needs addressed for their well-being, too).

Can you see how a T. might be confused?

It doesn't sound like your T. is abandoning you, just trying to figure out if it's him causing your activation level to skyrocket, or something in the office, or what happened to cause you to switch from one appearance to another.

I used to experience my T.'s challenges as abandoning me, hence the 'emptiness.'

I'm determined that I will break my pattern of 'abandoning the relationship before he can abandon me' - a lifelong pattern for me. So, I keep forcing myself to go back.

I can tolerate his questioning, now, even though it feels frightening or painful at the time. Because my T. gives me an honest view of how my self-protective behaviors look to some people...and it has shown me how these defenses which once kept me alive now hold me back.

Every time I've been ticked at him, I've gone back and told him. ...and learned that he was not meaning to make me feel anything like what I did feel. ...and he's worked hard to alter his approach on things so I know he's trying.

My poor T. really was upset when I fired him the first time...but not at me, though if course I thought it was at me. But he was appalled that I perceived him as angry and threatening me. He was upset at himself for the loss of attunement...something we both work hard to keep, but like any relationship, has some better days than others.

Did you experience emotional abandonment before? If so...does this feel similar?

Regardless if I'm making any sense, I hope you will continue to search for a T. You'll face these same issues over and over in life and it's far less painful in the long run to be willing to be teachable the first opportunity that arises. I sure wish I had known that decades ago.

Until we learn skills to help our insides match our outsides, we continually experience being misunderstood. DBT helped me a lot with this. Now, I rarely feel like I get misunderstood, but before....this was my life.

...and it caused me continuous stress and conflict with people.

Working through these hard issues - not that I'm anywhere close, yet - has brought me far greater daily peace of mind and enjoyment with healthier people.

Don't give up on yourself. You have the courage to listen to yourself and ask for what you need.

What behavior of his would you want him to change?

Monster, good for you for calling the other therapist. I think it's important, like Bloom has suggested, to reengage with the therapeutic community at this, especially as you are feeling so on the edge. I think this is very understandable.

One of my major triggers is not being heard or not being believed, it comes from my family trauma background. I understand that you have concerns about the therapist questioning why you were not losing it out in the waiting room. Oddly, my tdoc was none too thrilled to see me doing that at times and discussed we me ways to keep centered while out there. While falling apart in therapy she would let me bleed it off to a point (if that's what I needed at the time, I have emotional issues come up and there are times that's how I express them) then start asking me questions and always followed up with coping skills.

I might suggest writing out ahead of time what you are looking for in a trauma specialist, what you are dealing with, what experience they have, and some of the road blocks you personally feel you bring to the plate. Mine, miscommunication and shields up/distrust.

Lots of good help here, I hope you continue to post - also great information on this site!
Take good care,
Rain

Good idea, Rain, I will make that list today! Thank you all so much for your help. I realized in the middle of the night that I wouldn't have been able to go into a closed room with my old T again anyway. I was so distraught before he made the comment that when I interpereted that he did not believe me, it really smacked me down. I am triggered by people invalidating my feelings and demanding that my intentions are different than what they are. I have had many falling outs with this guy over the past year.
