News Another Shooting In The Us

I was so struck when I heard the news, made me sick ... why children ???? Prayers sent to all, the souls of those children, the staff ... to the family, friends, medical staff, to the policemen / women who were on the first line ... my God,the shock, the bewilderment ... the anger felt by all those close to the victims ... at loss of words now

First off, I hate guns. I'm not totally sure why, maybe because they represent violence to me. But the truth of the matter is that these guns that the shooter used were his mothers. She got them legally and registered them. She was the first to be killed by them. Then, for some horrible, unknown(at least at this time), he went to the school and shot innocent people and children.

I pray that these children who possibly saw their classmates shot and killed will not suffer from survivors guilt. The same with the adults. I pray, or hope, that the families, friends and community can get through this together. This is a horrible, horrible tragedy. My heart breaks.

It is an unfortunate truth that violence occurs everywhere. Some of it just doesn't get as much press, even here in the US. It has gone on for centuries. Now the media coverage is there more then ever in some societies compared to centuries ago.

For me, there is no place and no generation that is entirely safe.

Britt is that ever true. I was talking to my daughter and she said every school should have metal dectectors. I think it is a good idea but with the economy being as bad as it is I do not see that happening. My daughter says we need guns for home defense. I do not think so. I think we need to make it harder to get a gun and no assault rifles.

Let's not talk just about gun laws and focus too on strengthening the schools. These teachers shouldn't have had to risk their lives to protect those kids, but they did out of love because teachers don't get paid enough to do it for any other reason. They deserve to be safe in their workplace as much as our kids deserve to be safe while learning. I want metal detectors, yes, but I also want security companies employed and better gate systems. Stricter pick up/drop off measures and video cameras at all access points. I know that sounds extreme, but I think we're to the point where it is necessary.

I went to a junior high that was incredibly large when I was young and we had a team of security guards patrolling all day long, one day a student brought a knife to school, the security guards were on him within five minutes of a student telling the teacher. My high school also had security, walkie talkies in every classroom and gates that were closed once school started so that all traffic had to first go through the main office to gain access to the school itself. Yes these measures were kind of overkill, but we were as safe as any student could be.

The news said he broke into the school. This makes sense. I think Loveneverfails is right. We need better security at our schools. At all of them. I have had to quit watching the news. If we did not have the news we would never have heard about this. I hope some good comes out of all of this horror and terror. I pray for all the little kids having to go to school with this knowledge. I pray for all of the people involved. I pray for peace and calm and the strength to carry on. Peace for our schools is a great place to start.

I think the school system were i live has it right. We have what are called resource officers in our schools everyday. They are armed sheriff's deputies amd all have years of experience in law enforcement. Sometimes, our local Sheriff even pays surprise visits to see how things are. It started out with 1 officer at the High School. It was such a big help it became 2 officers (middle school has 2 and 1 at the elementary schools). Sometimes, the local K-9 unit takes a walk around too. Behavoiur problems at school are down!

It sure would kill two birds with one stone. More jobs for people and the safety of our schools is guaranteed. I would love that. We need more law enforcement everywhere. Things have gotten out of hand. I know it has its drawbacks but for the sake of public safety we need to consider it. I hope the powers that be are discussing these things like we are.

I've only read the 1st 25 posts here BUT, can anyone stop arguing and possibly focus on the little children who lost their lives.
The first 25 posts were made in August this year, in response to a different shooting incident in the US. This is also the 'news, politics and debates' forum and the topic for discussion refers to the first post of the thread, being -
After the Colorado shooting debate I again raise gun laws with another shooting near The Empire State Building. Apparently New York has some of the tightest gun laws.

America how many mass shootings will it take? Something has to change doesn't it?

Don't misunderstand my intentions here, I'm absolutely appalled by this most recent shooting, of innocent children. My heart breaks for them, their families, their little friends, the emergency services and teachers who had to witness it, and everyone involved.

Let's not talk just about gun laws and focus too on strengthening the schools.
This is just my opinion, but the US doesn't need better security in schools, it doesn't need teams of security guards patrolling every school, it doesn't need armed sheriffs in schools, it needs completely different gun laws.

Until the US change their gun laws, and their gun culture, there will continue to be mass shootings. I understand that there is a difference in (gun law) culture between the UK and the US. We don't bear arms in the UK, we don't even arm all our Police Officers. Yes, we have illegal gun crime. Only we don't have multiple shootings, in our schools, our cinemas or our shopping malls. Yes we have had the odd tragic incident. But they are rare. Not monthly.
