Just curious what alternative therapies your therapist uses in treating PTSD. My current T uses brain-spotting mostly with a little of whole-brain techniques and every now and then emdr. She also "Runs the Bars."
My therapist uses cognitive behavior therapy, and always asks me to notice physically what is happening inside when I describe my traumas, triggers and stresses...
My last therapist didn't use EMDR as I was not ready for it so I did talk therapy (not much talk happening ) and used crayons and a sandtray. She also had cards and scent and toys. I was also given massage by a masseuse that had counselling training as part of the treatment. I chose shiatsu as one remains clothed.
My psychiatrist just started using somatic experiencing with me. It's as miraculous as emdr was when I first started using that ten years ago. She uses SE in conjunction with brain spotting - which we've mainly been using for about three years. I still can't tolerate massage very much. I'm on a year-long chiropractic program which amazingly is helping my ptsd.
Craniosacral therapy with a different practitioner. With my current psychotherapist I do art therapy, dreamwork and body psychotherapy as well as talk therapy. Outside therapy, I've also had spiritual healing which is a type of energy healing similar to reiki.
My therapist also does sound and breath therapy, which I think I'll try at some point.
ericaboo, Peter Levine wrote a great book that helped me understand what is happening physically. "In An Unspoken Voice" I also liked his older book "Waking the Tiger" but Unspoken Voice covers a lot more. Another book which takes SE one step further is called Healing Developmental Trauma. It's more for clinicians but it was the BEST book I've read about what I experience daily. (and Living in the Borderland is also great - though not really about SE)
Anyway, reading the books help with the therapy. My T can only explain so much. It's helpful to know a bit more without having to discuss it during process. :)
I've done Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Also, my present therapist says she does a smattering of different types, but has not elaborated on it past that.
My therapist does CBT, she's used tapping on me twice and dream analysis. Talking helps and so does the dream analysis. I'm not crazy about the tapping. And I haven't had any big moments where I felt like it made any kind of dramatic difference.
