O

oneandonlyMOM

Today is day 6 of my workout plan. I usually can't stick with anything. I will find some excuse to avoid it. But this is working for me. My energy is higher than it has been in years. Someone suggested yoga-but that will never work with my high anxiety. I can't shut off my thoughts. Whereas working out seems to distract my brain.

Feeling positive!

Good for you! Keep sticking with it. Once it becomes part of your routine it will just turn into something you do automatically.

I started an exercise routine back in January. Now I'm at the point where if I miss a day I feel out of whack. It's been so good for me mentally and physically so I hope you find the same! I find the higher impact workouts help keep me grounded and help me to feel that my body is truly attached and present.

I totally understand about the yoga. The thought of trying to "clear my head" is terrifying. To me that just opens up my mind for racing and intrusive thoughts. I have stuck to higher intensity workouts such as aqua zumba, land zumba, boot camp style classes, weight lifting and running.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Go for it gurl! I love working out. Somedays I'm tired and don't feel like it, but I say - let's try it for 5 minutes and if my body tells me no, I won't continue. 9 times out of 10, with my favorite music playing, I'm back in the mood in five minutes. Nothing like pumping that oxygen in and feeling your strength. Anything that confirms I'm no longer immobilized is fantastic.

Sometimes I am physically burned out, then I take a rest day.

I tore a glute smashing tennis balls on a ball machine and am paying the price. So don't forget to warm up!

Have fun!

Congrats Oneandonlymom! You are inspiring me . . . ;)

I've been thinking I need to incorporate exercise into my life. I used to be very athletic, in great shape, and didn't need to exercise. I have a mindset that working out is boring and I can't seem to get past it. Any suggestions how to do that? Or how to get myself just to begin?

I'm seeing that I really need support to get me going.

Hi DMerish!

I jam pack at least 30 minutes every morning. So I don't have time to get bored or let my mind start wandering. I downloaded an app on my phone that has really been awesome. Its the 7minute full workout. Everyday it gets easier. And I use a wii fit, which incorporates fun and keeps me accountable.

I can't afford a gym membership, and I don't think I am ready for that social surrounding. It used to be enough to just work and do activities with friends. But I don't have those key elements anymore.

I journal, so now I keep a fitness log too. For me, I need to actually see and re-read my entries to notice improvement. I wish I wasn't so hard on myself.

I'm also a sustaining member of my local gym (I signed up before it was built five years ago and I pay less than $5 a month), but never use it - not ready for the social surrounding either, lol. There is a fitness room in the complex where I live but not sure where to start. Maybe I simply need to begin with the treadmill for 10 minutes just to get into the habit of going there - what do you think?

My employer pays for my dumb phone - can't afford a smart phone at this time though I'd like to for all the amazing apps I hear about. Maybe I'll look at Craigslist for wii - I've heard it can be fun. I'm going to have to get creative!

Your post made me smile. I remember when I use to do 10k hikes with my bf through the wild woods of BC, Canada. Very challenging and rewarding. Got to have that energy back again.

Keep it up!:)

OneAndOnlyMOM, It's so nice you shared and so great you're feeling positive! You've obviously inspired a lot of people. :)

As for yoga, it took me FOREVER to get into it, and I still tend to always say to myself, "No, maybe later," whenever I know I should do it. But, after doing yoga a lot, it does get easier, and you can get out of your head and into the breathing eventually (I have so many problems just breathing, it's pathetic! I could tell you stories... ;) But that's why I think I NEED yoga.). I guess, I'm saying... yoga can be extremely beneficial, but if you're at all like me, it takes A LOT of practice. I think the most important thing with exercise is to do what you like... it makes it so much easier!

I love Francie's idea... just try for 5 minutes and see what your body says. That's what I would do, DMerish. And it's really, really, really important not to overthink it. Really, those Nike commercials have a point... "Just Do It!" Every time you think to yourself, "Should I exercise?" you gotta throw out your battle cry, "Just Do It!" Eventually your brain gets on board, if you yell at it enough. (*Joking*) Because, the hardest, hardest part is starting. If you don't think about the starting, and just skip that part, it's easy to exercise, feels good and is always worth it. Oh, and you should always have some reward at the end. It's usually smoothies for me. I like 'em and they're good to refuel my body, too. ;) But anything that works for you as a reward... okay, maybe not anything, let's maybe avoid things like a big piece of chocolate cake. But even if that is what it takes to get you started exercising... hey probably wouldn't be a bad thing anyways, just don't do it every time. (I mean, there's ice cream, too, y'know! (*Joking*))

Hope this helps,
D
