Anyone have any experience of BUPA and PTSD? Did they cover much and do you know if delayed onset has an influence on their decisions?

Many thanks.

I was looking into it for a while, better than the NHS - they'll offer 2 years limited therapy services, but still not great. I suppose if you pay for your prescriptions though it may all add up and be better than the NHS, but is suppose that depends if you can afford it, which I couldn't - that is to say, I don't know how much it does cost, but I couldn't afford anything. Good Luck Abstract :)

Hi Abstract,

My previous counsellor also did private practice and BUPA was one of the options. Normally, I'd suggest that one way to explore this would be to find a potential therapist in that sort of set up and ask their advice, because they'll know the best approaches to get the most you can from it. However, I know that the idea of finding a therapist is a real challenge for you, so maybe that's out of the question?

If so, I hope you can find out through another route.

Kas, how did you find out? Thanks!

l therapist in that sort of set up and ask their advice,
Thanks Hashi. I never thought of that for some reason. If I knew think I was not going to go to them then it is possible I could contact someone. A bit unfair but will give it some thought. It would help a lot with looking if the financials were more doable. I can do it as is but finding someone is hugely less easy as most trauma professionals are astronomical the last time I looked and I can't afford that!

In general I've found quite a big difference between different parts of London. It seems to follow the house prices. :meh: When looking at DBT therapists I switched to looking outside London from where I lived. ie considering up to an hour's journey in the direction away from London rather than up to an hour's journey into somewhere in London.

You could always email someone and explain, and ask if they'd be willing to simply give you advice about BUPA. Of course they might not respond, or might respond to say they weren't willing to give advice on that basis, but I think there'd be quite a few therapists who wouldn't mind sparing a few minutes to help someone get into therapy somewhere. They might prefer the actual advice to be via telephone, though, rather than committing themselves to a written email about how to work the BUPA system!

When I was stuck finding a somatic therapist, I ended up ringing someone in Worcestershire whose website I liked, and saying he was too far away but I was looking for someone in my area with the same sort of approach and could he suggest how to find someone. He was happy to talk to me. He just wanted to help people.

I cannot find the original source for this, but on searching now I have found:
On the PDF from BUPA entitled - A guide to Bupa's mental health and wellbeing therapist Network, that "We ask that our members receive therapy which is time limited and guided by the supporting evidence and research. It should focus on supporting acute clinical need and helping to prevent relapse. However it is expected to be limited in duration and short term. We do not fund therapy for chronic conditions or ongoing maintenance / monitoring of a condition. "
Then on a PDF from BUPA entitled BUPA Select Summary of Cover, That you can recieve psychiatric treatment if you are an underwritten (meaning that you provided your medical history on application) member only after two years membership, for a maximum of 45 days each year including both in and outpatient treatment.

And from this article dated April 2011 from the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/money/2011/apr/30/bupa-mental-illness-payments-cut

There is a web chat available on BUPA for more information, if you don't like using the phone but feel able to ask someone there instead for a more definitive answer. I'm sorry I can't find the page that I read it on about a year ago, but there website has changed a lot (and in my opinion, not for the better :p)

Does anyone know their policy on this?
I am afraid I don't. Maybe someone will come up with some answers.

Good point. It's such a quandary as travelling has its own set of attached problems. Anyone with DBT is the worst it seems! I think they just multiply their fee by 40 % + when they add it to their skills!

rather than committing themselves to a written email about how to work the BUPA system!
Ha! I do like this idea and am attempting it. Thanks.

same sort of approach
I have done this too. It's a good idea.

I read it on about a year ago,
It is probably gone! Thanks for what you posted Kas. It all helps. I did try the chat but had the expected outcome where they want you to contact an adviser with your policy number etc. What it did help me find was their list of approved therapists so very helpful thank you.

Anything that helps me fight the idea that finding a suitable therapist is a little less likely than finding the holy grail is good.

I should be feeling positive at the moment as I managed to scroll through some of the names. Huge change compared to the last year even though I did it in ways that still created distance. Went into a freeze and :cry:Then in a freeze and . Overwhelmed and without doing much. Finding it very difficult to stop the intense self hatred aimed at my pathetic neurotic self. Apologies.

I agree that this is a reason to feel positive, It's a very big deal. But I won't try to make you feel positive if you don't want to. ;)

Definitely. For some bizarre reason, when I started decent therapy I found I lived and worked within walking distance of the only appropriate charity centre left In the whole of London at that time. Having a 1 hour 15 minute journey for somatic therapy, and now having a similar journey for talk therapy... It's tough. So many issues with that.

I hope you're able to progress this, despite all the challenges.

Supportive hugs Abstract, but only if you want them of course  you took a step forward and one day you'll be able to take another step, whether that's tomorrow or next year. I like you Abstract, a lot, you're one of my favourites if not my #1 (no jokes, but also no offense to anyone else) here. I'm pretty sure you've told me to take it easy on myself many times, so I'm returning the favour. :)

I'm just glad I could give some good info back to you for all the many times you've helped me.
