Anyone familiar with her? Yesterday I shared how I feel about EDMR and suggested we use it as a last resort. I don't see the need to re live the horror.

She suggested researching Brene Brown. LOL

Thoughts..

There is no need to relive the horror. Is this what is keeping you from processing your trauma? I think an important part of effective processing is preventing one from reliving the trauma. If your therapist/therapy can't do this, keep on looking.

I find her lukewarm at best. In that talk she makes one point that I thought was really valid, but seeing that I can't remember the point, it couldn't have been great.

But my feelings about her aside. I fail to understand how BB connects with / or replaces EDMR.

Maybe the connection is that EMDR involves opening up really tender places/experiences and Brene Brown talks a lot about the power and balance of people who allow themselves to be vulnerable? I love Brene Brown's TED talk, "The Power of Vulnerability", but I like to apply cool ideas like hers with a light brush around trauma stuff, because of how differently trauma is coded from other experiences. Not to say your therapist absolutely isn't onto something, but...I feel ya on the caution. I still do love Brown's talk, though...

Yes I couldn't get through much of that talk. Maybe watching it another time I will. First impression was that she would make a lot of money off that because what she's saying appeals to everyone's basic need. Not sure if trauma-related though. That's a bit more involved than re-defining one's self or perceptions.

Did you watch it @Survivor2Thriver ?

There is more to her work that just that TED talk. Although I, too, am unsure of the connection between her and EMDR, I think that her work can be extremely helpful, especially her more targeted work on shame, which you can see more of here: [DLMURL]http://brenebrown.com/about/[/DLMURL]

I guess this is where it loses me, tried to watch the one on vulnerability (shame) again, because there's no point discounting it if it is helpful. Made it through 15 of 20 mminutes. Where I have a problem with it is 2 things: just speaking for myself some 'absolutes' she mentions do not apply to myself (for example, if you don't have compassion for yourself you won't have it for others- totally inapplicable in my case on both counts, as I have great compassion for others and nearly zero for myself). Therefore, I tend to throw out or be suspect of all or most of the rest of the content [which is not accurate likely but I can't help being a bit wary of; that is, what other generalizations are not applicable? (Or more accurately 'information', as generalizations are always a fallacy) ]. Same as regards authenticity, I feel I am very authentic but it in no way decreases my shame, personally.

But I have to say, I am also negatively biased from the start when she says her instructors indicated "If you can't measure it, it doesn't exist". That she could accept such reasoning. To me, that defies common sense, even is egotistical. Conversely, if we can't 'measure it' perhaps we don't know where or what to look for, or don't have the means or capacities yet, to even fathom it? When I was a child, for example, there were (x) identifiable planets, they thought that was the most likely reach. Now they know differently, though there were no means to measure it then.

The second problem that I have with it is a bigger one, but only a gut one. Somewhere I feel she isn't actually being vulnerable in her own delivery, (or perhaps even as regards herself). Something just simply doesn't reach my heart. But perhaps it's just the public speaking delivery, it feels more rote to me. Also, and this is small but I've found to be true (I've watched and done it myself), it's very common for people to touch their nose (or do other things) when they aren't telling the truth, or don't really agree/ mean it. I noticed that.

But likely the fault is just mine, or with me. To all who find empowerment or understanding in it I think that's great. All these people can't be wrong, I best :speechless: ! :)

I think @Survivor2Thriver you have ample courage to try EMDR if you feel it's warranted and your T recommends it. If you trust their recommendation and expertise, it can be another way to try. I don't think you have to think of it as a last resort. As I meant above, leave yourself open to healing, regardless of the modality. I don't mean 'quack' cures, per se. I just mean, for example, people have healed more with eg a therapy dog than their therapy proper. You are doing great and I believe will continue to go forward. You have lots of passion. Disregard my negative view of BB as I am no authority, others can give a more informed opinion. And I'm an 'odd' case. :O_o: :lurking:
