Hi everyone. I just found this forum.
Anyway..
I was raped two years ago.
I was 14 and now I'm 16.
I've wanted to report it for a while but there's no evidence other than my mental health leading to multiple hospitalizations etc.
What do you guys think I should do? Any advice? I really don't know what to do...

Hi sweetie. Sending a big hug your way :hug: I'm sorry that you've come here under these circumstances, but glad that you are reaching out for help.

First of all, what sort of support system do you have? Are there any friends, or family who know about the rape? If you do decide to report, it is important that you have support. If there aren't any friends or family you can trust or feel comfortable talking to, I urge you to find a therapist who can help you.

Secondly, is this a person you still encounter in every day life? Have you ever been threatened by this person, or otherwise fear repercussion if you were to report? You should only report if you feel safe and comfortable to do so. If you don't, I would urge you again to establish a support system before making any decisions. At 16, you shouldn't have to face this alone.

@Lukie

Thanks for the response!
I have a wonderful support system. Family, friends, trauma therapist and a therapeutic school. My only real fear is that I'll be dismissed as some stupid girl. I don't want to be laughed or scoffed at on this matter as it's a very sensitive topic to me.

That is a very understandable fear, but remember, if you do decide to report-- no one will know you are reporting except for the police, or anyone you tell. The police will not laugh at you or 'dismiss you as some stupid girl'. It is their job to take your claim seriously and to investigate. That is not to say there is any guarantee the person will be prosecuted. But neither will you be dismissed or laughed at. There is no statute of limitations on sexual assault in the state of New Jersey. That means it is never too late to report. The fact that you were below the age of consent at the time will only help support your claim. No jerk can try to say it was 'consensual' when you're not even old enough to legally consent. Good luck to you dear

In the USA you don't have to report to the police, you can report to social services. At this late of a date, a court case or even charges are unlikely as its a he said she said matter with little to no evidence I am guessing? This is why I say its best to go through a therapist who can guide you through the reporting process rather than walking into a police station. I reported through my therapist and never had to meet with anyone. I knew there wasn't a criminal case, but I knew that reporting was the only way to lift the silence. good luck!
