Am I Being A Prude, Or Overly Sensitive?

@FridayJones, lengthy and interesting post. Did you interview any men on the prospects of dating hookers for your research?

it is true that it takes time to recondition our 'gut reactions,' but recondition them we can and do.
So how have ubiquitous warnings about the dangers of fat and sugar consumption changed your feelings about tiramisu?

My own position is that social norms are emergent properties. Social life demands inter-personal coordination - interpersonal coordination, to be efficient at all, needs conventions. Conventions emerge necessarily from social life.
@ Eleanor, sorry, my bad, my collectivist detector gave a false alarm.

Sounds pretty much like J.S. Mill to me! or even Rawls for that matter. :bookworm::whistling:
JS Mill, the man who Rothbard described as "The Lenin of Laissez Faire" and his seriously screwed up son as "el wimpo". They're far too authoritarian for me (I don't think there is a single evil which cannot be justified by utilitarianism).

I try not to preface my anarchism, except to say that I don't throw bombs. I think what it boils down to is an understanding of interpersonal boundaries and a rejection of abuse.

My biggest influences are the early Quakers (I wish I could be as brave as they were), Bastiat and de Molinari from the French laissez faire school, the "Austrians"(Hayek was very flippy floppy, his reasoning in "Road to Serfdom" was anarchist, then he kept spoiling it with "but I think"s, Mises was far more consistent, even if he never followed Rothbard into being an anarchist) and the present day natural law scholars such as Bruce Benson, Frank van Dun, George Ayittey and the late Michael van Notten. Gerard Casey, at Dublin, falls into several of the categories. I'd like to meet him for a tea (or a beer) before he leaves UCD this summer. He actually teaches modules on the philosophy of libertarian anarchy, at one of the top mainstream Irish universities.

and I can't leave out the first person whom we know of to come up with the idea of "emergent orders", Lao Tzu. I love the idea that the most printed and most translated book in the world, second only to the Christian bible, is a 2500 year old anarchist text.

just don't like what I'm saying and will go to any lengths to get it out of their brains.
I don't actually have a problem with what you're saying as much as the way you're going about making your points.

I deeply believe we are all entitled to an opinion. We are also all entitled to be wrong. But, from my perspective, you're trying to make your points with really sloppy reasoning. You're using too many extremely broad generalizations. I can't remember you allowing even that exceptions might exist. (I've MET a few unicorns!) Near as I can tell, your experience with people in the "sex trades" amounts to you've known a couple dancers? or known a couple people who knew a couple dancers? (Sorry, I don't remember the details and it's too far back for me to want to go fishing for it.) And, you've read a bunch of stuff. Ok, fine. That's something to base the start of an opinion on. But, if you want to go from there to thinking you know much of what there is to know on the topic, and to think you understand all perspectives and that no one else has anything to offer...... ? Well then you're selling yourself short.

I am 100% sure there are men out there who wouldn't date or marry a woman who has worked in "the sex trades". I'm also 100% sure there are men out there who wouldn't date or marry ME, because I'm working in a male dominated field and am an uninspired cook. So, should I quit my job and learn to cook so I can "get a man"???? I think I'd rather go unicorn hunting!
How does the theory explain men's attraction to children, animals, corpses?
I was kind of wondering how it explained the occasional attraction to other men. Could be an anomaly. Could be that not all conditions that exist exist because they are beneficial from the state point of evolutionary psychology, could be we just haven't seen the benefit yet.

Now who's playing peeping Tom, here. You were given a link with quite a few resources, and multiple personal notes denoting the so miserable sex worker idea you are pushing, is just in your head - and you still keep continuing insisting it's objective, relevant, and everybody else don't have enough data.

So how have ubiquitous warnings about the dangers of fat and sugar consumption changed your feelings about tiramisu?
If I had so much money as you have ways to derail with no relevance to the topic, I could party with whole this forum daily.

There's also what I see with my eyes everyday and conventional wisdom since the beginning of time.

My point was there are severe limits to "reconditioning" biologically based instincts--the difficulty of remaining on a diet is one example.

As for @FridayJones's "resources" I will admit I didn't look at them, because I assume they are people on a rationalization hamster wheel trying to feel better about their bad choices.

THAT, I would be interested in hearing about,
Girls who have done sex work and chosen not to hide it date guys who are vastly beneath them--that's what I can see with my eyes. I also have seen all my life that girls who get a rep are used for "hook ups" and not made into girlfriends or wives. If you haven't seen that yourself, all I can say is how's the weather on Mars?
