I have always been responsible about my student loans. (I am the original poster, by the way). I paid on them when I could, which was when I had a decent job. Now I'm on disability and I can't. Every year I send them my financial info so they can determine what my payment should be. It's been 0 since I've been on disability. I feel bad about not being able to afford to pay on it anymore, just like I feel bad about not being able to work a regular full-time job anymore.
I was disappointed in my husband about this, but I know a lot of people in his generation who did not take this responsibility seriously. I actually had a boss once who bragged about not paying back his student loans. I thought it was appalling. Anyway, my husband did the right thing . . sent a letter explaining that he no longer remembered what amount his loan was for but that he wanted to make restitution and work on it.
