@FridayJones, please point out the exact posts where people have said "nobody with PTSD should work with people"

there are a few members on this board who don't believe that anyone with PTSD should work with people in pretty much any capacity. And they're quite vocal about it.
Can I just say I'm not one of them - I've been working with vulnerable people for most of my adult life and am currently training to be a therapist. I've had to take time out at points to deal with symptoms and issues and I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the strain that training can place on people with PTSD. I'm on record as saying I think it entirely depends on your own progress through healing and the best people to assess that are those who know you in real life and know how you're coping day to day, which is why I'm struggling to understand what feels like a fairly strong response to a kindly meant concern.

@Healing1129 you've said a couple of times now that you misspoke - that happens to us all from time to time. The difficulty is people can only respond to what you write, not whats in your head when you're writing.

I never said you should take a year out, I asked if you could postpone practice because my understanding from your post was that you had worked with a client for one session, not that you were shadowing someone else and that's what I responded to - observing a session is very different from actively working with someone, there would naturally be distance in observed practice that isn't appropriate in direct work.

@digger has posted a link that has strategies that you might find useful I hope they help.

@Solara, there have been a few posts (within the Education and Member Diaries sub-forums) that are so strongly worded as to imply that no-one with PTSD should ever go into a counseling career.

They also argue that if one accepts that PTSD cannot ever be fully cured, then there is never an appropriate time for someone who has a PTSD diagnosis to ever go into a career in mental health.

No stone throwing for the purposes of provoking a personal argument. Thank you.

@Healing1129 - I think altogether, what you are getting by dealing with a repeat trigger is a phenomenal opportunity to get really good at mindfulness, specifically non-judgemental observation.

Breath. Keep your breath totally under control and find that place of listening without reflecting back on yourself. I firmly believe - and experience - that there is very little one cannot control with breath and mindful listening. When you know its coming - even better. Start metered breathing and mindful listening a full 20 minutes before.

Also: spend at least a portion of your therapy just processing current event triggers like that.

Please, Friday, point out the exact posts where people have said "nobody with PTSD should work with people"

Most likely, the exact same collection of posts that led you to say this, just a few posts above mine:

I think this is one of those issues that is certainly a hot button on the forum.

*** Debated about answering, but since this part of the question was left after moderation... Eh. @Solara If you want to shout at me or call me names, or even have an honest discussion, now or in the future, my PC is open for anyone who wishes to contact me; rather than continuing to derail any threads where you & I have a differing opinion. I will not be replying to any more barbs on this thread. ***

I am bawling profusely at the moment. My intent was not to discount patients' experiences for the sake of my own. I have no intent of putting patients in harms' way or not taking seriously the impact that ability to treat has on other people.

I am so sorry for your painful entry here.
This board will assist with solid building practices to simply hear/listen to differing opinions, build tolerance, perhaps compassion & for accepting responsibility of one's own choice of thought -action repertoires within awareness.
