Cynthia here. Oh My God. Has anyone here had EMDR and had it work to reduce their triggers? I am booked in tomorrow to meet a Therapist and then start EMDR when ready. I feel like it is my last resort. I want someone who has had it to tell me that it worked.

I also would like to know if there is anything that can help others understand PTSD. My 39 year old daughter wont speak to me, has asked that I not contact her or her family (including my grandson). She wants a "normal" mother and is angry that I would ring her when this PTSD started and tell her I wanted to kill myself. I cant explain any more it just makes her furious with me.

Her last words were "well get some help". Is there any point in hoping she will understand and find some compassion one day.?

I cant work either. How do you all manage to work? I had to take tranquilizers in my last job just to get through the day. It was high stress hospital work. Did anyone find it helped to move to a simple job. My life is so simple all I do is paint my old house and garden and go to cafes and the library, but I feel useless and surely life should hold more than that.

Thanks for listening to me rave on,

Hi Cynthia

Welcome to the forum, although the circumstances that brought you here are distressing I know you will find plenty of advice & support here.

I am just getting up to go to work so don't have much time to write in detail but will do later, but thought I'd give you some quick reassurance.

Two years ago I was a mess, signed off work, anxiety sky high & feeling like there wasn't much to live for. I had counselling with little result so 17mths ago I started seeing a psychologist & have had weekly therapy including EMDR with her for my trauma memories, its been hard work but so rewarding, we have also worked on my relationship with my children re ptsd. which are now much improved.

I have found EMDR really beneficial in my recovery giving me the opportunity to explore past memories that were causing my triggers.

I am now back at work full time, my symptoms are manageable & have a much more open & understanding relationship with my chidren.

I hpe that helps. I'll write again later.

Take care & stay strong, things can get better for you.

Annette

I've said this in another post, but I just started EMDR. I feel like it's a last resort for me, as well. I've only had about five sessions and then we had to stop because the therapist I'm seeing was being supervised by my therapist of the last six years and he passed away. It was very traumatizing. Anyway, the five sessions were pretty preliminary but so far, so good. The therapist I've been seeing is looking for another person to supervise her work and then we can start up again. She said we're just in the middle of the work and haven't really started the deep stuff so hopefully we can continue soon. Anyway, I guess I'll keep you guys updated on all of it. Good luck!

I found EMDR helpful. Once it hit the right target I knew almost immediately.
It's not a cure but I found it knocked out some of those thing's that stand in the way of feeling more stable.

I don't think it's helpful. The absolute best and most helpful thing to treat PTSD is therapy. The trick to that is to interview a few therapists and go with the one who sounds the "best" in your interview. Make sure they can handle traumatic experiences and they have exerience helping those with traumatic experiences. I find it's best not to be too dependent on the therpist by not calling or emailing in between times.
If you get a bad therapist, obviously therapy won't help. There are therapists out there who treat very minor things, and PTSD isn't minor.

You might find the posts in these threads useful. In them, many members share both positive and negative experiences with EMDR.

tgrl, when I had EMDR here in the UK it was a continuation of therapy. Obviously on the NHS here you don't have to pick and pay for your therapist you have what you're given but I felt very lucky with the one's I did see.
