@The Albatross I was in San Antonio on Friday and in a nearby town Saturday - Monday. San Antonio was braced for massive flooding and rains but there wasn't even a third of what was expected. There were no major closures or ISD delays that I was aware of, and everyone resumed normal activity Monday morning. If they are active duty, could they have been diverted for disaster relief?

I am also very worried for Beaumont. They have an alligator farm that was, as of a day or two ago, a foot away from the alligators being able to escape. Lots of them. Luckily, the venomous snakes were taken care of or moved. Can you imagine having that threat added to everything else?

I know Houston is in a once of a lifetime flood and I, too, have many friends that are still sheltering in place in their homes. But let's also remember all the other areas that have been devastated too -- Corpus Christi, Rock Port, Beaumont, to name a few.

@TexCat I saw someone that I already despise say yesterday that the flood was due to mankind's cancerous and selfish ways and that we need to accept the change mother nature has put in motion. Um wtf? I also so a professor tweet something about how Harvey was Texas' punishment for being a red state (paraphrased), but that professor has since been fired ;)

Try to avoid that thread. Watch some rescues, if you can. See all of the ordinary people and businesses coming together, buying all the boats and canoes, and hauling ass that way to do anything they can. See the group of strangers form a human chain to rescue an elderly handicapped man from his car that is about to be overtaken by water. See the first responders carrying people's children and pets through the water to safety. There is bad, there will always be bad, but man is there so much good too!

Saw this this morning... so this is uplifting (not a link) Bass Pro Shops Providing Boats To Help Harvey Relief Effort

Beaumont and Port Arthur got over 20" of rainfall overnight. :(
Ongoing tragedy in Port Arthur. Saw pictures of the evacuation shelter beginning to flood with the evacuees forced to stay on the bleachers. The city is trending on Twitter and it's basically people begging to be rescued, like in Houston.

MIL did hear from my sister-in-law... she and her family are okay, very soggy but okay. Not very many reports about San Antonio area so they must have faired well under the circumstances.

The rain has stopped down Beaumont way, water is starting to recede slowly. My friend D lacked an inch of it going in her house... My sister got some water in the house, but it is starting to go down.... My friend D said another Hurricane is brewing out there.... lets hope people start to leave before this one hits land, if it's going that way.....

The rescues are underway, and people from all over the U S are going in to help.... a friend called from Kansas this morning talking about looters... told her we didn't care... let them get what they can... not anyone's priority right now. People are going to focus on the negative or what the news try to sensationalize....Those that don't have a clue what it is like to be in a situation like this.... focus on stuff they can relate to...
@dulcia, glad you dodged the bullet about S A.... crazy thing about Hurricanes.... they are still unpredictable....

A lot of good going on here.... A LOT, those are the things my friends are texting me about.... and Texas is a gun state, so maybe the looters won't be as big a problem as people are yammering about....

And last pictures I saw of the Alligator farm, it was underwater.... so God knows where there gators will end up.....

Just keep praying if you are a praying person, or sending healing energy... I am exhausted and not even there..... Having my own trauma from Rita rearing it's ugly head....

But am hearing my friends and ex husband are safe.... takes a huge load off of feeling so powerless....

Not sure where this was, but a man that has a mattress store opened his doors so people could have a place to sleep.... One of the phone providers opened all wifi in the area so people could text and stay in contact or get help..... so look for the good, there is a ton of it going on.... Proud Texan !!!

Mattress Mack! He is a great human. He has a few stores in Houston and opened two of them for flood victims. They have a restaurant in the store so there is food and he has all his mattresses laid on on the floors with blankets so people have a nice, comfortable place to rest. He did the same for Louisianians fleeing Katrina too!

So glad all of you are ok. My cousins family had some flooding but NOTHING like Houston so all is good on that front too. Yes, there are many good people out there and it's lifting when I see the news stories about all of the people coming into Texas to help people out!!!!

I'm sure some of the looters are taking advantage of some things, but at this point I guess it really doesn't matter...

Stay safe and dry!!!,

There have been some great stories on the radio about people helping people. On my way home tonight, they interviewed the owner of a Mexican-American bakery and one of his employees. Apparently some of the staff were trapped in the bakery and couldn't get home. So they baked. The owner said that, when he finally could make it to the store, the shelves were full of fresh baked bread. They proceeded to call the authorities and soon the police, in SUV's that could get through the water, were picking up bread to distribute it where needed. (At least where needed and accessible.) The CBC did a great interview last night with a member of the "Cajun Navy". The BBC has been covering this as well. (I can't help but wonder what the coverage here would be like if this was happening in Montreal.)

Anyway, a lot of the stories are pretty inspiring. I hope, though, that everyone runs out of reasons to be inspirational pretty quick!

Also! If anyone knows anyone sending donations, please keep in mind first responders. The police officers, firefighters, paramedics, SAR, and others can sometimes be forgotten and a local PD has said they are in need of NEW pacakged men and women's underwear, under shirts (black and white only), socks (black and white only), toothbrushes and toothpaste, and men and women's deodorant. They will also accept any bras or sports bras that are new with the tag on or in the pacakage.

Saw this amid the not very good news about the area (10 deputies hospitalized from fumes from a chemical plant fire... Beaumont's water supply, more flooding risks from storm water run off)... but wanted to share this. In spite of the rhetoric and politicization by some, this line isn't for goods, shelter or services... it's people standing in the rain waiting to volunteer:
