Are There Any Other Medical Students Here?

New Here
Just wondering if there are any other medical students here?

I'm struggling to concentrate and remember things and obviously with medicine there's just so much to remember. I've also had to have time off on several occasions. The uni have been very supportive so far but I worry they won't be if I keep taking time off. Medicine is so intense compared to other subjects (I previously studied for a BSc and MSc) and with placements and lots of waiting around and watching but not doing anything I find it hard. If I'm just waiting I end up thinking about things I don't want to think about and then I can't focus on anything.

It would be nice to talk to other people in the same situation.

I am not a medicine student specifically, but I am a high school student that has interests in waaaay too many subjects. So, maybe I can be of some help

This year I missed about 600 hours of school. If that means anything of info

Hi Rosie, welcome to the forum. :)

I'm a student... Not medical though but I'm struggling too.
If you don't already know it, there is a program called Anki that might be helpful and it's free. It's a flashcard program and I use it a lot. I also know med students at my university use it too and find it quite helpful. There is also a great addon called Occlusion for images to learn muscle groups and such.

Here's a video that'll give you an idea:
(this guys channel also has tutorials on how to use Anki if you're interested)

If you have any questions about it, feel free to PM me anytime.

Thanks for you response. How do you keep up with missing so much? I've managed so far and I'm not sure how, I worry I won't always manage it. I'm only half way through.

If you don't...
Thanks! They look great, I'll definitely check them out! I haven't really used flash cards before but they seem like they could be useful when I can't concentrate well

@Rosie04

No idea. I have 7-9 big exams Monday and Tuesday, and I am mainly spending a lot of time cramming when I'm capable, and losing the rest of time. Recently I spent a week sleeping.

Hi Rosie,

I'm a medical student and was diagnosed with PTSD last month. So far the university have been very supportive although only a select member of the student support team know about my situation. I am also really worried about taking time off and have my exams coming up. Had to take time off due to the trauma itself and also the after effects of my PTSD.
Would also be nice to talk to someone in the same position.

Hi Rosie,
I was a 3rd year Chemistry major, seriously considering medicine when I got PTSD. Of course I was undiagnosed for 2.5 years, so I couldn't give the university a decent diagnosis for them to give me help. In the end it took me three years to finish my 4th year and I had such trouble concentrating I knew there was no way I could go into medicine anymore. I simply ruled it out. I've now lived with PTSD for 12 years and I still struggle very badly with my upper-level vocabulary and with remembering dates, times, and events. Plus, the fatigue was so incredibly bad, I knew I couldn't have done a residency.
You are very brave and strong to keep working towards your Ph.D. in medicine. I have no advice for you, but I really wish you well. I hope you can find some mechanisms to help you continue in your studies and be successful!

I'm a 3rd year law student with ptsd. I visited the school counseling center and school disability office and got a prescription for zoloft. All of that helped but it still interferes sometimes. I focus on subjects that will allow me to specialize in areas that will work better with my ptsd. Looking forward to the future, graduation, and being in a specialty that works well for me helps. I also like flashcards and chopping my work into smaller bits to tackle at one time so that I don't get overwhelmed and have an urge to procrastinate.

Hi Rosie - joining this thread a couple months later... but I'm also in med school. I've completed years 1 & 2 - will start my 3rd year clerkships in a few months. :)
