My girlfriend was diagnosed a couple months ago with ptsd from being raped 9 years ago. I love her so much and all I want to do is be there for her. I want to educate myself as much as can to understand more and be the best boyfriend I can be for her. Any recommendations for what I can do and books I can read to further understand?

1) Don't forget that your effectiveness as a career depends on your own well being. Take care of yourself.

2) Pete Walker has written some really good stuff from a practical standpoint. Ono van der Hart and Nijenhueis (sp?) are the ones who came up with the theory of Structural Dissociation, which is the first thing that allowed me to make sense of it all.

3) Don't try to be her therapist. Let her therapist do that.

4) consider doing Mental Health First Aid training - having a structure to lean on when things get stressful may help.

As far as books for supporters go,
The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Relationship: How to Support Your Partner and Keep Your Relationship Healthy by Diane England is probably the best one to start with. We call it "the Bible" here the supporter section. It lays out the basics of PTSD, and it also covers communication and conflict resolution.

As a good companion to that, I always recommend Shock Waves: A Practical Guide to Living with a Loved One's PTSD by Cynthia Orange. This one deals more with supporter self care, which is very important too.

Joining the forum is a good start. I'd check out a few of these threads and articles here.

The Ptsd Cup Explanation

Stressor vs. Trigger - What Is A Trigger?

Things To Know When Dealing With PTSD (As a Carer)

That should give you a good start!

^^^ Definitely the video series. They're geared towards supporting somebody with combat PTSD, but a lot of it applies to PTSD in general. They're worth a watch, especially if you do better with visual learning.
