Does anyone have recommendations for books that teach valuable life strategies/lessons? Something along the lines of lessons that normal kids would have learned from their parents. I was severely neglected, and raised myself the best I could, but sometimes I see glaring deficiencies that my friends learned within their families that I just never got.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean. Like coping skills sort of thing? I too was neglected one of my parents was an alcoholic and mentally unstable. For me the best thing if been trying to learn is self care. To give myself the compassion my parent wasn't able to. Ms Spock has a very good thread on that subject and I've been using the website from there. The guided meditations are really good http://self-compassion.org/category/exercises/ also the mindful way through depression is a really good book. As well as feeling good the new mood journal is a must read.

Or is it more for inner child kind if work is it a children's book you're looking for?

I understand where you are coming from, for sure; it was one thing to heal from PTSD, and it is another task to developmentally catch up with emotional maturity and socialization skills.

Some books that helped me understand what I needed and how it naturally develops, so that I could create ways to create it in my life: The Magical Child, by Joseph Chilton Pierce, was wonderful. I also found Piaget's books and publications very helpful, since he was a very humane, developmental psychologist. And lastly, I like another of Pierce's books, The Drama Of The Gifted Child (most of us), informative about challenges that I came up against.

And learning all the social nuances that were beyond my grasp since I was frozen in fear, I don't have a book for that; still gaining the knowledge as I go, and am more alive to noticing social graces.

I can so relate because so many things just did not occur to me and I tried to be a better parent than my own parents were and I made a ton of mistakes which I have paid for and made amends.

i am sorry that I do not have any books to recommend to you but mabe Google it or watch U Tube videos on the topic. I wish you the very best.
