I have been taking Topamax for partial seizures for several years at a pretty high dosage. A few months ago, I started having some major issues with aphasia - I was having trouble finding my words - and my neurologist said that was the primary side effect for Topamax so he lowered my dose slightly, having me taper off of it over a month. It's still a problem, but maybe a little better.
I've been talking to people on the epilepsy forum and doing a lot of research on Topamax and have discovered that it also has side effects that include low energy, fatigue, and depression. I sent an email to my doctor and asked him if it could be contributing to all the issues I've been having - have been having for several years - and his response was that, yes it could, but since it's not the sole cause, I really need to see a therapist, take meds, see a psychiatrist, and exercise and if I wasn't doing all of those simultaneously, then I wasn't fully attacking my depression.
OMG. This was about 3 weeks after I saw him - he has in his records exactly what I'm doing. And although I'm not doing all of these at the moment, I've been working so hard to feel better for sooo long. It makes me crazy to think that I've been on a medication that may have been contributing to my all-the-time fatigue and low energy and depression. Even if not being on it would help a little, I don't want to take it anymore. This depression has ruled my life for years. He knows this. My neurologist and other doctors before knew this and nobody ever said anything about the Topamax. I'm reading patient after patient talk about how they've had to stop taking this at doses of 25 and 50mg. I have been on 700mg. I'm now down to 400mg, but was on 500mg for many years.
Anybody have any experience with this med?
