Emdr And/or Neurofeedback?

I know someone getting EMDR therapy who says he is able to talk about the traumatizing events without any emotion. I wonder if anyone here has had a similar experience or knows someone who has? He doesn't feel like it's working for him. I'm wondering if that's because he has stuffed his emotions down so far he can't access them?

I have done quite a bit of EMDR. Based on my experience, it's quite possible a part is blocking the emotions. This is done often by a protector part. The protector part is doing its job, because the part behind it is possibly holding a great deal of the traumatic memories.

I don't think the protector part will step aside until it is completely safe to do so...meaning safety with therapist, safe environment outside of therapy and a general safety net.

The protector part was designed to protect the more vulnerable trauma part, both live in extreme fear of the trauma and will protect the host at all cost from reliving or feeling the full effects of the trauma again.

The only way this part will take this risk is there is complete trust in the therapist both during the process and for the afteraffects.

The vulnerability this calls for is unlike any other and is likely to cause great damage should these things not be in place. Any type of abandonment issues only greatly increase this risk.

Wow. That is so interesting. Thank you for your excellent and thorough explanation! I really appreciate it! I don't think he has safety or a safety net outside of therapy so I guess that could explain why he's not opening up to EMDR treatment. He also talks about other things with zero emotion that would make most people quite emotional. It really weirded me out before I realized what was going on with him. He'll show humor and agitation, but that's it in the way of emotions. He's very closed off. Poor guy. I sure hope he finds relief soon. I'm glad to hear that a lot of people have success with EMDR. It's good to know that he's on the right track, even if he's off to a slow start.

Absolutely! He's fortunate to have you support him, I hope he has a good T and can get the help he needs so that you can both work through and move past this.
