Feeling Annoyed With Therapist

Thank you all for your helpful replies which have given me a lot to think about!

It's true that I don't fully trust my therapist but am not sure if that is an issue of mine or because he has actually done anything to justify my mistrust.

I also do not feel that he is too concerned about my well being outside of the therapy session e.g. he hasn't suggested I call a crisis line if I feel suicidal or really suggested any kind of coping techniques I could try.

He is very kind to me sometimes and he is generous with his time (our sessions frequently run over) so it's a tricky one. I think I might go back for a couple more session and try to bring up some of my concerns (not sure if I will be brave enough!) and if I still don't feel comfortable shop around for a new therapist.

Thanks again.

Bottom line is you are paying them. So somehow the power differentials get reversed (interestingly) where we start to become timid around them, worried about bringing things up to them, worrying whether they'll be supportive, etc. In reality, they should be the ones continually questioning their approaches and assessing whether they are working. They should be concerned about their words as we hang on to every one of them and they know it. They should be concerned about being the best therapist each and everyday. You should feel comfortable 'calling them' out when they are out of line, whether it be a comment about your personal life or an ineffective treatment approach (i.e. no crisis plan). Remember, you hold the reigns in this relationship as you are hiring "them" to serve you.

I had the same issue regarding my T not taking my suicidal ideation seriously and I felt dismissed. I mean no crisis plan whatsoever. It made me feel unsafe. Anyway, I ignored many red flags along the way that I wish I hadn't. Make sure that you reassess your therapist in light of these things. Has this therapist done other things that have bothered you? If your therapist is overall a good therapist then that is great.

However, Your mental health is the most important thing at stake. Never stay complacent in "any" situation just because you think that this is the best you can do. There are always other therapists if it ever came down to that. You deserve the utmost treatment. Hope this is helpful. Rising

He is an integrative therapist. I found him via his website and thought he looked kind and patient (not the best way to pick a therapist I know).
