Try all of these things for two weeks and I promise your anxiety and sleep problems will slowly go away
Respectfully, not everyone's sleep and anxiety problems are of the same degree or come from the same source. Having said that, your suggestions are very good ones to support health, and exercise in particular has a big bearing on sleep quality.

@SadDreamer

This Happens to me as well. I had this for 3 years now. Sometimes it would be every night and happens how many times a night. I'm have 3 kids and I'm worried about them growing up without a Father. I'm hope 1 day this heals. Sometimes when it happens in try not to panic and just take deep breaths and stay steady n calm as possible it'll pass.

I have been having issues with waking up right as I've dozed off thinking I can't catch my breath and my heart is racing. Sometimes it's even after I've been asleep for a few hours. It is scary as hell!!! It makes me not want to go to sleep. I just had an EKG done and wore a Holter Monitor for 24 hrs. My results will be in tomorrow. I really wish I could get a good night's sleep!!! :(

I have the exact same experience. The difference is that I don't have anxiety or stress or PTSD. So I 'm guessing it's something physical. Can't explain it.

@stuff

Yea a year ago I was diagnosed with a Hiatal Hernia. Anyway recently I have been kept awake by these sudden Jerks as I am falling asleep! Really scary feels like I can't breath and heart is racing when I jump up. I think it is related to anxiety which did not start up till I had the issues with my stomach. Any suggestions?

Hope this helps someone with similar issues. Rob

That's PROGRESS. That means you are actually facing your issues and need to- your body is screaming for it.You are finally in a place to relax and cope so your body has decided to make you see that...It is so common for people with this disorder to experience these physical symptoms. I still suggest crossing T's and dotting I's, but relax and know that you are having a NORMAL response to something ABNORMAL. And you can recover.

I like the advise! Yea unfortunately I have been there too. Following dreams building and running my own business. Seems like I have been living like my hair was on fire for as long as I can remember. Anyway I think you are right that your body gets enough and says "I have something for you!" Try on some of this anxiety or other unpleasant symptom. Recently for me the sudden jerks when falling asleep. Feels like I can't breath! Wake up gasping. Good quote!

I am so sorry that all of you experience this. I do the same thing on most nights. For some reason, it's worse when I take a sleep aid, such as benadryl. I also have sleep paralysis often. It's where I am stuck in between being awake and asleep. I can't move, I can't speak, I can't even seem to wake up. It's terrifying and this makes me scared to try and fall asleep.

I'm so relieved to know that there are others that have this. My heart went into AF back in 2008 and I had to get cardio verted (heart reset via electric pulse). I've been fine ever since and consider myself stress free.
Recently I have been having these jolts just as I'm about to fall asleep... It feels like my heart is about to stop. I went to the doctor to have it checked out and he told me "relax...relax...relax". A blood test also showed a lack of vitamin d (so I have been taking vitamin d/calcium tablets).
I have always had an irregular rhythm so I'm used to some slight fluttering when I lay down, however this sudden jolting awake has me terrified of going to bed each night. It has been leaving me worn put the ought the day due to getting minimal sleep. :(

I think I have it when I'm more exhausted.

Also sometimes that feeling of free falling & going to impact but that's secondary.

Maybe it's the body's way of dealing with low blood sugar (ie to wake us up & prevent sleep?) Or something to do with nerves/ night sweats?

i started to have the same problem before going to sleep at the same time when i started working in an office setting... i thought i was having heart attack, stroke, panic attack, migraine, you name it... and i don't have ptsd that i know of

at first it was so bad, i went to emergency where they did cat scan of my brain, checked my heart and asked questions about exposure to radiation and so on... eventually they found no problems and the doctor told me that i don't want to be put on antidepressants cause they kill your liver... i thanked her and then another doctor told me to take it easy, start eating healthy and get some good multivitamin
it took me a while to learn how to eat healthy and find a good multivitamin... both suggestions helped but what really gave me a health boost is drinking filtered water only vs tap... i learned about fluoride in the tap being poison and got myself a few filters... i'm not affiliated with any manufacturer, just trying to help people in need: the filter that helps me the most is zerowater, you can get it in retail stores and it's not that expensive... ever since i started drinking filtered water only, i would still get a jolts but the terror would be no more... just a jolt before going to sleep, then heart racing for a few seconds and then a state of peace and harmony after which i sleep like a baby

years passed since then and i truly learned a lot about this condition... i still have it every now and then and after some research came to a conclusion that in my case it is completely normal and happens only in certain scenarios... again, i don't have terrors any more when it happens nowadays

what i learned is this is a pure life preservation mechanism of your body without which you're likely to not wake up... if you experience this, you should be thankful unless you'd rather be dead... from my observation such signal is sent when brain doesn't get enough oxygen, with not enough oxygen brain damage occurs...
i'm a perfectly healthy individual, however i still experience this and here's why... because i still work in an office setting, my body muscles are compressed most of the time during the day, meaning that my legs, arms, back and neck are not relaxed... this is bad for your veins and arteries because those are compressed also and a normal blood circulation is not possible... but when you go to sleep everything changes, muscles relax and your blood is released to flow freely... this is the whole different mode for your body to operate, and your oxygen levels need to be readjusted in order to operate in this other mode

that's what your body does, it jolts in order to wake you up to promote breathing and your heart would race to supply more oxygen filled blood to your brain... i currently try to do 3 things to avoid jolts: keep my arms and legs stretched vs bent in an elbow, knee; jog or walk just before i go to bed; lift some weights cause it seems to improve your arteries

i hope it helps

I too have this problem I'm very scared started in 2011 and has plegued me since any ideas

I've experienced the same thing for years and had anxiety/anger issues all my life. Falling asleep and then feeling a surge of the most intense panic imaginable, it really does feel like you're dying.

As unconventional as what I'm about to say is, I found out it was because of a past life in Vietnam. Apparently I went to the grave without resolving PTSD so now I'm here to heal.
