Maybe its your personal experience, but Ativan has a half life of 10-20 hours while Xanax XR has a half life of 10.7-15.8 hours. So, Ativan is by no stretch of the imagination "short acting" when compared to Xanax XR when at the short end (10 hours vs 10.7 hours) and at the long end, actually works for more time (20 hours vs 15.8 hours).
The problem with Xanax is that it keeps you on an anxiety roller coaster. My doctor won't prescribe it for this reason. He says he prefers to even out anxiety over the long run so prescribes Ativan or Klonopin. I don't opt for Klonopin as it is a strong depressant in my system.
