Forum Subject Prefixes

I'm still sorting out how to navigate to begin with, so attach a big rim of salt to this particular margarita.

- A TMI /Auto-trigger subsection in each.
&/Or the inverse
- KISS / PG rating subsection

When I'm in a good headspace I try to keep at or below the same level of information posted in the original, but I also don't know what's inherantly triggery for other people in general, and when I'm in a bad headspace "I don't care" isn't exactly accurate, it's more that I don't have a good filter or awareness of other people. But I still don't want to be inflicting my garbage on other people. Same token, half the posts I've been about to delete / realizing here's too much detail on, I end up getting a PM thanking me for that. So my brain is in a bit of a kerfluffal.

Since you're asking for ideas... it would be nice for the 3 brain cells I have huddling together for warmth to have a clear cut details are welcome "This may get ugly" or "This is where you keep it simple, stupid". Conversely, it might help readers who are feeling edgy to avoid things that might set them off.

I actually like not having trigger warnings. They stress me out, as I never know when to put them. If this community used trigger warnings, I think I would put it on everything I write. Oddly, trigger warnings on others posts never really help me avoid what really triggers me the most because it's not what people assume.

I like it when others leave it up to me to handle myself and not assume they are inflicting their "garbage" on me. So often what others think is garbage is actually a good thing for me to read that helps me have more insight into my own life and helps me feel so much less alone.

I am intrigued by the "PG" label but very much on the fence about it.

There may already be a section here just for it that I just haven't found, yet...

But:

It seems like there's a constant influx of supporters trying to ask vets questions over on the sister site, despite the warnings / it's worth it to them to at least try (or they can't read). Loooooooooooooooove (think it may need more o's?) that it's vets only. Can't say that enough. Same token, though, if there was an 'ask a vet' / 'vet supporter' section over here, then the Qs could get reposted & answered when someone doesn't feel like biting. I know I don't have that patience, most of the time. Plus all grouped together might forestall the same Q 200 times (then again, maybe not, people being as we are), as it would be easier to search past/similar q's.

I dunno. Might be a terrible idea, or one that was already tried & went badly, or got no traction. Like I said, new & still figurin things out!

My personal opinion is that prefixes aren't necessary in the majority of forums, since the 'search' function is so easy to use and efficient, so long as members remain vigilant in writing specific thread titles.

For example, the therapy section, if you want to talk about EMDR or CBT or exposure therapy, mention it in your thread title, rather than something generic like I need therapy help. So long as members keep their thread titles specific, I see no need for prefixes.

Take the employment and education section, I suppose you could prefix that with either employment or education, but if the title is specific enough, then what's the point when it should already be obvious what the thread is about from the title.

Perhaps, there could be some forums that would benefit, but I haven't looked at all the forums to see which might benefit, specifically.

Personally, if I was looking for threads on a specific subject, I would use the search facility, because the prefixes would only show what was relevant on one page of a list of threads.

Don't panic, I have zero intention of bloating anything. Symptoms and other disorders have really needed prefixes all along... and it is the one that stands out the most to me, though there are other forums that could benefit from them. Again though... there always has to be a line that changes them from beneficial to a distraction that can't be crossed.

Symptoms and other disorders:
  1. Mood disorders (depression is the most common, so perhaps depression instead?)
  2. Bi-polar disorders
  3. Personality disorders
  4. Dissociative disorders
  5. Physical effects
  6. Other
I'm not sure personality disorders needs it's own category; dissociative disorders definitely come up in that forum. I think the challenge in that forum will only be for people who don't know a diagnosis for their symptom cluster...but it would be really nice to search out specifics like this.

A different approach could be less specific on the mental illness side:
  1. Psychological
  2. Physical
  3. Sexual
  4. Other
  5. (I feel like there should be one more on that list but can't quite put my finger on it.)
Medications and substances:
  1. Anti-depressants
  2. Anxiety medication
  3. Holistic
  4. Addiction
  5. Other
