New Here
Hi,

I really hope I am not intruding in your forum, as this truly is not my intention. Following is a little more about me and why I am posting on here. I am in the final year of my degree studying Psychology. As part of this, I have to undertake a personal project of vast interest to me. I have chosen to base my study on Posttraumatic stress disorder as it has a place close to my heart; having witnessed it first hand, as my sister has suffered from the disorder for the last nine years. It is my wish to carry out research in this area as I want to make a difference to the treatment and well-being of all posttraumatic stress disorder sufferers and understand it at a personal level.

My project is based around posttraumatic stress disorder, general health status and personality type. These three elements have never been investigated together previously. By partaking in this research, it is hoped that another aspect of PTSD will begin to be better understood and a gateway opened for further research into the psychological treatment of the disorder. I hope my study will allow for the progression of professional practice and help those in the future who become subjected to this.

The task is extremely simple and will only take at most fifteen minutes of your time. You will be required to complete four questionnaires online, which are completely confidential and anonymous. The researcher will only be able to identify your results by a number, you will never have to give your name and you will never be asked to provide any personal details that could identify you. I believe there should be no triggers and should you have any questions please feel free to post or pm me. Finally, you are entitled to withdraw your data or consent at any time during the research.

I truly hope you will help me in completing my project, I have 5 weeks until it has to be completed and any help would be greatly appreciated. After uni I hope to carry on researching in this area and help to make posttraumatic disorder a more understood subject. This in turn I hope would help people like you and my sister. Please feel free to contact me with anything related to the research, as I really would value your comments, questions or help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post, even if you do not respond your interest is much appreciated. Those of you who do wish to respond I look forward to hearing from you soon

Hi Catherine,

I'm also a third year BSc (Hons) Psychology undergraduate in the UK, also doing a study related to PTSD. My dissertation is investigating overgeneral memory (OGM), a psychological phenomena commonly found in PTSD; and investigating this with personality, analytic thinking, and rumination.

But anyway, I'd be happy to take part in your study... and perhaps you would also take part in mine?

Lisa

Hi Catherine,

Its great to see people like yourself and Lisa conducting research in this area.

I had a little bit of bother getting the link work but found that with the addition of http:// it worked fine.

Ah... sorry I have just seen the link to do your study... I will get on that now. I missed that bit before when I read your post!

Hi

I am also conducting a study with the same ambition and purpose - to further and improve the knowledge and practice of treating people suffering from the clustered symptoms diagnosed presently as PTSD (I have some objections to the classification and the approach taken by the scientific community).

I have no personal experience making me a valid subject to study, but I would be glad to offer help of other kind - I could use both being and having a sounding board and someone to exchange thoughts and views with, the more and the more diverse the better.

I am caught in the dilemma of having to seek and find data in a country and a system I do not know much about. I am a Swede, and came to US only a few years ago. It is hard when you are not yet a resident to get access to data, especially data of such personal kind as this.

Anyhow, if anyone would like to help me or seek help from me...I am here. Mail me on [email protected], chat me up on eirann77@hotmail. com on MSN or continue the exchange here - where ever you feel comfortable with.

I also would like to hear your thoughts on a specific aspect of the PTSD diagnose I have some issues with. But I will keep it to myself until I feel I am not intruding with it by posting it here and now.

Thanks for coming together for the benefit of us all

Liza

Hello.

Thank you so much for all your support. It really is great to see support for research in this area as there is still a vast area that needs to be understood. I am also very glad to see that there are other researchers out there who want to improve the understanding of PTSD.

Lisa, is your study based online? I am more than willing to help and participate in your study. Just let me know how and I'll do that for you. I will need to be placed in the control group as I don't personally suffer from PTSD. However, if it is fairly straightforward, I'm sure my sister would be more than willing to help (she has suffered from PTSD for 9 years).

Soulmate of a hero, you are more than welcome to take part in the study, you will be placed in the comparison group but this is equally as helpful! It may be interesting for you to look at how mine is compiled. A sound board for our research sounds good but you may need to be a little more specific as to what your research is focussed on. My focus is associations between PTSD, general well-being and personality. I am very interested in hearing your thoughts. My email is catherine.packer@ students.plymouth.ac.uk

Richard, thank you very much for taking part and especially your note regarding the http:// at the beginning of the address. ptsdforum.org do not allow live links so I have abided by this rule.

Sending my utmost gratitude to you all once again. If you have any further questions regarding the questionnaires please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Catherine Packer, University of Plymouth, UK

I think that just means a drink...like wine or beer..alcohol.

I would be interested as well....when things calm down for me. I am also a registered nurse, diagnosed.....have probably read a lot of info too. Psychology was my highest mark in school actually. anyway, take care.

Hello once again to all who have shown interest in my research.

This study is now closed

Hello to everyone who has shown an interest in this research.

The utmost gratitude is sent out to all who took the time to fill out the questionnaires.

I would just like to inform everyone that this study is now closed.

The support shown for the research on this forum has been fantastic and I would just like to express my thanks once again.

I hope the support for research in this area will continue and that together we can discover new aspects, bearing important implications for coping with PTSD and in addition, for medical professionals who aid people suffering PTSD as a result of traumatic life events.

Thank you once again for your support.

Kind regards

Catherine Packer (University of Plymouth, England)
