Gabapentin/Neurontin Advice

I think I'll keep it staggered for now and take every twelve hours
This is a good plan to stick with, until the dizzy feeling begins to minimize. (To me, it feels a tiny bit like having had too much alcohol)

If you do end up going to the three times/day dosing structure, plan to start the mid-day dose when you have a couple of days in a row that you can just crash out in the afternoon if you need.

thanks @joeylittle I get a similar feeling of alcohol or mmj consumption. When I take it the top of my head tingles a bit and inhibitions seem eased. I'll be sure to stick with the twelve hour plan until the dizziness fades some.

I just saw this thread and am wondering how you are doing on the gabapentin, @MrMoonlight. I take 600mg/day, originally for nerve pain but after I realized my topiramate was contributing to my depression and we stopped it, the gabapentin stopped some of the newer seizures I was having.

That said, I was on 300mg in the morning and 600mg at night and it was highly sedating. Additionally, I was completely off-balance in the morning when I walked, and walked into walls frequently. My neuro told me it *couldn't* be the gabapentin (not sure what info he was reading), but he agreed - finally - to a decrease. The severe sedation and other symptoms stopped almost immediately.

I should also say that all symptoms continued after being on it for several months. They *never* improved.

Do you mean it helped with seizures but not ptsd symptoms?

Have you taken other nerve type meds? I’m just curious. Thanks!

I was not prescribed it for any psych issues. It was solely for the pain from occipital neuralgia. It ended up helping with the seizures and, at higher doses, I was crying a lot and *very* angry.

I've been on multiple different antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, and one atypical antipsychotic combined with an antidepressant. Not currently on anything right now except the gabapentin and lamotrigine (prescribed as an add-on for the seizures).

am wondering how you are doing on the gabapentin,
It's been a miracle med for me @whiteraven . I feel calmer and am less reactive . I'm taking 600mg 3x daily. Initially I was tired but now I'm only feeling slight sedative effects. I don't take xanax or any benzo anymore. I think it's been 2years now that I replaced them with MMJ. The addition of gabapentin allowed me to go forward with therapy. Without it I was a mess. My psychiatrist recognized that I needed more stability. Gabapentin surly helped me get there if you know what I mean.
The severe sedation and other symptoms
Were you on it for a long while? I increased my dosage slowly over a few weeks until I found my correct dosage. My psychiatrist gave me a lot control over that. He gave me a prescription and said he wanted me to tell him how much I needed to take. He gave me guidelines and hard limits but in time found what worked best. For me a lesser amount more often helped me best.

neurontin has been prescribed "off label" like this for years. Pfizer paid a huge fine for advertising it as an anti-depressant when it hasn't been approved as one by the FDA. It has anecdotal benefits.

"Post hoc, ergo proctor hoc" is a time-honored description of one type of fallacious thinking. It is Latin for "after something. therefore because of something" as in, "when the Superbowl is won by an AFC team the stock market goes up". In this case, it is said by a doctor that after prescribing Neurontin to an epileptic they seem happier, therefore Neurontin has made their patient happier. Enough doctors say similar things and Neurontin is being prescribed for all sorts of things it wasn't approved for. Thats all fine and good until the companuy that makes it claims the drug IS an antidepressant and the the FDA slaps them with a huge fine and families of people that comitted suicide while on the drug start winning civil cases on the premise that if they had been on an actual mood stabilizer they would still be alive.

personally, neurontin made me a zombie. I was in a haze and unable to keep a creative thought in my head long enough to get it going, nearly lost my job and probably still suffer from the ramifications of that experience.

call it gaba pentin, call it elixer of the gods, it is neurontin and pfizer paid a huge fine for selling it as an anti depressant, it isn't one.

Even if I develop epilepsy, I will hope they have a better drug for me because neurontin is on my permanent 'no fly' list.

yeah, this is how I felt. I'm still on it, but am working on getting off.

Are you still having luck on this med?

I have to be off Trileptal for awhile so this is the next one I'm trying.

I really hope it works for me.
